Go to the end of Kaloli in HPP and try the Shipman beach hike. The whole thing is probably too far for "easy hike," but you can just go part way. Pretty sure dogs are allowed, at least I've seen them on the trail. It's part of the Old Government Road trail.

Come down to Kapoho on a Friday when Smiley has her Green Lake"e farmers market open.

Pay her 10 bucks and hike to the top of the Kapoho Cone and experience the incredible view.

From Pahoa take 132 to the Red Road (137)and make a right. It's about 1/2 mile on the right.

When I first read the topic name an image of Dog the bounty hunter and his mullet hiking through the jungle popped into my brain, I'm still trying to get rid of that picture.

Not a hike but, take a walk around the university campus. When I worked there a lot of people used to do that, covered walkways also.

That's a good idea actually with all that hairspray he'd be a good mosquito trap just let him walk in front.

Some of our dogs favorites (your dogs preferences may not be the same)

Dogs on leash are allowed & welcomed at Liliokalani Park (off of Banyan) in Hilo

any of the trails to the Wailuku River off Saddle Rd (MM 12-21)

Trail or off trail pawing) out to Kaimu Beach off of Uncle Roberts & the old Kaimu Café- Kalapana

many of the trails radiating off of Railroad from the Keaau side

Kaloko Honokahau Nat. Hist Park (Kona side) allows leashed dogs (& is one of the only dog friendly beaches on island

Kau South Pt to Green Sand Beach

Although NOT allowed, The farthest E & W points of Canoe Beach Bayfront) in Hilo often has dogs on leash (and ours in the water)

Kings Landing to HPP trail

Vis center Mauna Kea up to the red cinder cone to the west of the drive

Mana Rd...lots of walks

I saw some lady letting her leashed miniature dog excuse pee on the sidewalk 3 times in downtown hilo!

I wanted to say something but had flashbacks of that guy letting the crazy lady in hilo "test drive" the 70mph in a 30 zone.

I think mackenzie / malama ki would be fun for dog walks just make sure you bring bags for potential poopings.

The Shipman Beach is a gorgeous spot for sure. I think we did the hike in October a couple years ago. The hike was a bit challenging at that time. Lots of mud, and tricky spots with said mud, large tree roots, rocks, etc. Some areas required some thought as to how to best get through, and the lady that took us (as she had been there several times) fell down in the mud once. It might be easier this time of year. The beach is very much worth the effort to get there. I am also told, that that beach is a dangerous place for swimming. It doesn't look like it is, but the lady told us and warned us, and was very concerned about other people that were wading in the water there.
I'm sure others will comment on this. I'm no great swimmer, and a young friend of mine drowned at Kehena Beach, when he entered the water there to help someone else that was in trouble. So, I take warnings from local people serious.
Oh, and you'll probably see grounds workers/guards there. You don't want to get off the trail, or go close to the buildings there.
