Source for Dog Bones?
#1
Our vet recommended that we give our dogs more bones to keep their teeth clean. I found some antler pieces (another of her recommendations) on Amazon but haven't had much luck finding bones at the various grocery stores. I always buy bone-in cuts when I can find them, but it seems like most stores sell boneless cuts. Does anyone know of a good source?

I have had some luck at Kulana Foods in HIlo (they are a certified slaughterhouse)...

however not much luck with getting our dog to chew them...she buries all real bones inc. rawhide, meat on & meat off bones all go into the ground... to... well get really yucky...

So we have the floss ropes, & other chewy dog play things ("Busy Buddy Waggle" bones are a fav)

I've seen them at cost u less, they do meat cutting on site, so ask them. The best bones are the "knuckle" bones that don't splinter, or long bones. Some vets recommend that you cook the bone to kill bacteria and always avoid any kind of rib or chop, because they do splinter and can harm gums of intestinal tracts.

I brush our dog's teeth with an old toothbrush. I am not sure why everyone doesn't do this.

Thanks, everyone. I'll try all those places.

I agree with UnknownJulie that brushing the dogs' teeth would be a great idea, but these dogs won't tolerate it. I tried to get them used to it as puppies, but no dice. I've done it in the past with labs and other large dogs, also beagles, but these little guys hate it.

Locally, Target in Hilo has the deer antlers. They sell out quickly bc everyone's discovered them. Make note on the pkg back whether it's small or medium, price diff. is big and frankly I can't tell the difference sometimes. amazon has them, too. Moose, deer, elk.

We also discovered these things: http://www.target.com/p/petstages-dogwoo...A-14493972 Not really sure what they ARE, but my dogs fight over them and like them more than the antlers. I think bc they have nubbies sted of smooth. they spend hours with them. (cheaper at Target than on amazon btw) I have 2 small dogs. Probably won't hold up to a big dog. The alternative for one of my dogs was the legs to my china cabinet. Mo bettah.

My four dobermans really like the bones from Kulana foods, they will chew them for days. I tried to brush their teeth but they don't like it, they refuse to open their mouths when they see me coming with the tooth brush & tooth paste.

It takes a few people. (my kids) We wrap a towel around the dog and pry the mouth open. I then take my chances, as the dog tries to bite the toothbrush and my hand. I growl at the dog and tell the dog, "this is just the way it is"... We get it done. A big dog would be harder.
