New transfer station in Pahoa?
#1
What is with the new transfer station and recycling center across from the post office in Pahoa? Does anyone know why this now exists? We just spent 5 mil on the new one in the back of Pahoa.

It isn't a transfer station.
It is simply a private recycling business, just like the many that operate all over Hilo.
It IS a terrible location though.
Just wait for the smell and noise that will be coming from it.

Terrible location indeed. A garbage dump right in the middle of town. Nice (not).

Must be considered better than a skate shop, otherwise the Savior of Pahoa would have come down and stopped it. [B)]

It may be a temporary use the requires little in the way of infrastructer while the land owner moves a different project through the long and byzantine process of getting approval to build. Someone spent a lot of money grading those parcels and then legally consolidating them into one lot. The recycling center wouldn't have needed that investment, so either there is a different long term plan, or there was a long term plan that fell through.

I agree with Carol. This looks like an intermediate step which requires little capital improvement. Eventually something more substantial will occupy the site.

Who knows? What ever strikes the property owner as the best return on the investment.

With a little luck maybe a surf shop.
