Make sure you stop at Coconut Grill in Hilo. They totally need someone who's great at customer service. We were surprised to have a real bad experience there a few weeks back. Waited like 90 min's for our food. Everyone around us had eaten and left, and we were still waiting. I'm not one to complain, but I finally had to. They sorta shrugged while they apologized, saying the kitchen was super busy. (Uh, yeah, we know - we saw how many people had been served!) Too bad - it's got good food and good atmosphere. Maybe they need YOU! They've had openings for servers lately. I get the feeling they lost more than one person at once.

Well I figured I would hop on this thread instead of starting a new one. After 8 1/2 years of lurking on this forum, and probably 10 years of planning, tomorrow we finally arrive in Puna for real! We are building in Kehena Beach Estates, but will be renting near the Painted Church for awhile. My wife and I have spent probably a total of 8 to 12 months visiting friends in the area over the years, so we don't expect too many surprises. Moved from Atlanta and downsized to Key West 3 years ago, so we have had a good taste of some sort of Island life, and are looking forward to the drop in cost of living (!) and someplace even more laid back.
I generally don't post unless I have something constructive to offer or ask, but I am pretty sure you will see me now from time to time.

Made the epic journey from pit to Puna yesterday. 20 hours from airport to hostel in Lealani. So glad to be here.
Yes as everyone says it is more beautiful than words describe. Didn't have time or energy to do anything in Hilo other than wait an hour and a half for my luggage to catch up to me. I agree with one self about the frogs singing me to sleep. I don't think I met the party rooster but some ducks and chickens were tapping on the glass door to my room at 530 am so I got an early start. Went to pahoa to get some coffee and found it to be just about how I envisioned it. Gonna go back in for banking, grocery and to drop a few resumes.
MAHALO,all you Puna Webbers and Punatics for advise, encouragement and entertainment I have received over the last 6 months since joining this fourum .

Now the adventure begins! (although it sounds like you already had one yesterday...well at least Hilo airport is nice & laid back.... you probably could have gone out for a bite & a quick Hilo beach tour & gotten back with more than enough time for the wayward luggage! That is always one of things we have flexible when picking up guests, as sometimes the luggage takes the more scenic route to Hilo!
If you ever want to kayak, just email...we have a few & the fishing is good...just be sure you are OK with cutting bait!
