I have a little place in Orchidland and the mosquitoes can at times be vicious. Any home grown remedies for how to keep the population down and/or keep them from biting me so dang much?

The wetter it is and the denser the vegetation, the worse they are. I have one acre and 2/3 of it is fairly landscaped and maintained. Hardly ever mosquitos except shortly after it's been raining for a long time. The other 1/3 acre is jungle and when I go in there, I get a cloud of mosquitos that swarm me. Fortunately, I think most people build up an immunity after awhile. While they swarm me I hardly ever get bit and when I do get bit, they aren't big, red, itchy welts like on the mainland. As long as you have jungle, you'll have mosquitoes. If you tame it somewhat and get rid of any standing water, they won't be as bad.

My homegrown remedy was screening in my lanai.

I think Hawaii would be an excellent place to test the efficiency of this sterilizing mosquitoes but we are most definetly playing with fire 'Your whole idea about yourself is borrowed-- borrowed from those who have no idea of who they are themselves.'

The skeeters here are not at thick as in MN. When I lived there I used one of these and they work fairly well.

Ok Aramis. Here's what you can do for relief; As the first person replying to your post said, it't the vegetation that they love. Clearing an area around your house, say 60 feet in all directions around your house. That will really help. What mosquitoes seem to love most are bromeliads of all types. Get rid of these. They also like heliconias and banana plants. Its a mistake to have these by your house. Of course the standing water around the house is obvious, get rid of it. Check your water tank. Look under the cover and see if there are any larvae wiggling around in your tank. Secure the cover and bleach water to any in the tank. Finally I would get some natural mosquito repellent. You can get a couple hours relief without deet. Another handy tool is the mosquito swatter. You can buy a little mini tennis racket shaped bug zapper at walmart. Swing it through the air the the skeeters and snap crackle pop.

i would try a variety of things. if you have electric, get a electronic zapper thingy; pull up all the bromeliads and other water collecting plants; clear all standing water - turn everything water collects in upside down etc; plant citronella around the cabin; buy a spray called 'Schreiner's', its a herbal concoction sold for animals. you get it at the feed store. it will take the itch out, and prevent infection from scratching. it is alcohol based. do not spray near eyes etc. most insect bite creams are ok for the odd bite but not really for long term, day after day, use; light candles - mosquitos are kamikaze; (mosquito punk is toxic i think, so again be careful of long term use).
people are correct in saying you will develop a tolerance, but in my case that took two years, so you might as well reduce your stress till then it can be done. approach it like a puzzle. my aloha #10048;

I've been living in Leilani Estates for more than 8 years now and have built up no resistance to mosquitoes at all. On the contrary they find me quite irresistible and show their appetite for my blood regularly resulting in red itchy welts that last for several hours each.
Mosquitoes share top spot with mold and mildew for me personally for my most hated things about living here. That fogger that microage97 linked at Amazon looks pretty interesting. I may well purchase it and give it a whirl. I would love to work outside and not be attacked by the vermin.

I grew up here, no sign of any resistance for me. They love me, and make my ankles burn like crazy. Another imported nuisance from the continents that never bothered the ancient Hawaiians.
