District 4 & 5 Candidate Forum Video
#21
Maddie Green has been working quietly but effectively on Pahoa and Puna issues for many years. I have always appreciated how calm she can be when others aren't. She also is skilled at building consensus and has maintained a good relationship with the county personnel.

If you've never met her you should make the effort.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Thank you James. [Smile]
After I asked, another shot showed me her last name and a bit of the first name, and I remembered she was running. That's why I edited out my question.

I ran a search to get the right spelling of her first name, and I found an interesting column from early last year, when she announced, with lots of comments from RJ, Tiffany, Rene Siracusa and others.

It's interesting to revisit the conversation back before people were officially candidates.

Honestly, I can't make out who is right in this back and forth, as someone who wasn't involved in any of these organizations, just reading the criticisms.

Thanks for that Rob. Reading that thread she got pretty well trashed, so nice to hear the other side.

There are a lot of people I would like to meet, including her. I would say the same of the low key but energetic and effective persons in Hilo and Hamakua districts. They are very worth meeting as well, and I would recommend making the effort. It is easy though to get caught up in our own districts; they are quite large.

Luckily for me and others, this forum provides a good window into Puna.

Genuine question simply driven by curiosity. If it was answered in the videos, my apologies, but I can't watch them for more than a few minutes due to my internet connection at home.

Why is the guy who wants to create a biosphere wearing socks on his hands?

The bigger question is why they are different colors and if there is a significance to that, and are they a statement about sock puppets?

"This island Hawaii on this island Earth"

Uncertain of accuracy, but understand there were serious injuries of some kind.
As for the socks being different colors: he might have another pair just like 'em! Smile [that is a joke -- from having worn non-matching socks because that was all that was available at the time]

About those true/false, yes/no questions: The moderator, Christine Kubat would make a statement and then ask the candidates to raise their hands true or false, yes or no. She didn't say "raise your hands if you think this is true". "Or raise your left hand if yes and your right hand if no." The problem was the way Christine phrased the questions. The audience was equally confused. Don't blame the candidates for those.

Is Emily Naeole still in the race? Other than her campaign signs, I have not seen her on the campaign trail.

Yeah, the moderators were poor. The one was astoundingly inept and I think inept is too soft a word.

The candidate that gave the best visual impression, Paleka, was always inaudible. He needs to gain a public speaking voice in a bad way. I couldn't much tell what his views were.

The rest seemed pretty "out there" as far as I could tell. Some even by Puna standards.

I got the impression from a couple of the ladies, hopefully a mistaken impression, that not being a Native Hawaiian I wouldn't have representation.

Unfortunately it was a horribly run forum and those in charge should be embarrassed. The administration of the forum could very well have distorted the perceived opinions and views of the candidates.

I assume TEH's apparent worship of Pele is intended to gain Native Hawaiian votes. I wonder how that went over with what I believe is a majority Christian Native Hawaiian populace? Otherwise, sheesh...

Not to be taken as an endorsement (yeah I know) but I thought RJ did fairly well, held up against my original impressions of her. There does appear to be some brain beneath the obvious.... I almost thought she was going to stand up and think for herself. Oh well.

As for the other men. The licensed Chiropractor seems to have consumed at least a full quart of Koolaid but otherwise seemed intelligent. Socks, well, what else can you say. Surfer, well, kowabunga dude....

Oh and Greggor, for having been in office he seemed unsure and timid. I actually liked him better than most. He seemed like he was trying to use his brain and not just tell what he thinks the audience probably wanted to hear (at least partly). He appeared to be trying to keep an open mind on issues. Of course that could be interpreted as avoiding taking a position. Could be either. At least he has some record to look at. I got the impression he was trying to do an honest job but I also, for some unknown reason, had an inkling he might be under someone's influence (The mayor?). Of course with his youth and inexperience a mentor isn't a bad idea. I'd say there were obviously worse choices on the menu.

Very bleak slate indeed. I only hope Paleka is OK but I couldn't tell. I'm glad I don't have to make a choice. I thought my commissioners were wacked....

Edit because I forgot to trash the incumbent.

Any explanation for the socks on the hands? Worst part, the socks didn't even match! Smile
