the story and pictures I see are of the Cyathea cooperi, an alien tree fern that is HIGHLY invasive here after it was stupidly introduced here (we already have a few tree ferns as impressive, why introduce a non-native one???)...
they are similar looking in some ways to the 3 endemic Hapu'u ferns, but really are easy to spot when you know what a Hapu'u looks like, the invasive Australian Cyathea cooperi has a more upright stiff look to the fronds. I can actually spot them driving by at 60 mph, In Puna I see them in peoples yards most often, just saw a couple yesterday in a yard near the Kea'au propane place... ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

This project is mainly focused on Kauai. As bananahead pointed out, it's geared towards Australian tree fern which is a much bigger problem there than on the Big Island. It is present - people plant it, and ou can find it scattered in a few places like on the way up to the hydro plant diversion in Piihonua - but it's not nearly as invasive in native forest. On Kauai it's penetrated deep into some of the remote, inaccesible valleys like Limahuli and Wainiha on the north side, where they have to be controlled individually by helicopter before they completely take over.
