The state has been basically ignoring the LFA problem for years, and now are committing too little too late to effectively deal with the problem. Our local representatives have an obligation to their constituents to work to get the problem taken seriously, Gregor's district is the heart of fire ant centra,l and there needs to be pressure from Hawaii County put on the state to work with people who actually have LFAs to find effective solutions.

My 2 cents after attending 3 forums::
CC 4 Roy Lozano
CC5 Fran Pueo
HD 4 Leilani Bronson-Crelly
Reasons in all cases:
#1 - Sanity - this narrows the field considerably
Then, the civility and communication skills needed to be effective; respect for environment; smarts; working for people not corporations.

hey mendo i reached exactly same conclusion.
i dont want a council that looks like a circus, sane, good communicators, been around the block (a hawaii block) long enough to know whos who and whats what. i think fran pueo will represent those she works for, cant tell for sure about roy, but among the choices at the debates, he would get my vote...

Despite Illagan not taking a stance I still think he's the best choice with Maddie Greene as a close second. If I could know even a fraction of Maddie's views on the pertinent issues then maybe I could reconcile voting for her over Illagan, for District 4.
For district 5 I guess Pueo seemed the least harmful.

I got Madie Greene's election pamphlet in the mail today. She lists a number of civic projects, which is fine, but when she lists the issues she sees as most important for Puna (transit, GMO, geothermal, squatters, parks, illegal structures, and more), she doesn't give a position or suggestion as to what she might to about any of them. Not one! Greggor gets accused of being wishy-washy, but at least he has a voting record on some of these issues. I'm sticking with him for another term.

Sativa,
I don't have any quarrel with you advocating on behalf of your candidate, but I take exception to your jabs at the redistricting efforts that took place in 2011. A lot of honorable folks from Puna worked very hard to create those two new districts, replacing the old Hilo districts that crept down Highway 11 and Highway 130 to make up their tally (even though the council persons couldn't have cared less about the issues facing Puna). Finally in 2010, the census revealed that Puna had swelled to 45,000 or so souls, and warranted two districts of her own. Here's how it works, just so you know: total population of the county, divide by nine. That came, in 2010, to just about 21,000 people for each district. So Puna got two. Actually, Puna had so many folks we couldn't squeeze them all in, so we lost Volcano. I tried and tried to keep Volcano in Puna, but it couldn't be done. Gerrymandering? Seriously? Rene Siracusa represented us on the committee. Do you question her ethics? She is the straightest arrow I've ever met here in Puna. The two districts were created according to the rules and without any consideration as to the makeup of the population in each proposed district. No one got an unfair advantage.
Run your race. Run hard. And good luck. But don't try to scapegoat the people who worked very hard to bring Puna two votes on the council, for the first time in forever.

I missed this post, but I think I like Carey too much to ever wish that on her.
