We went to the Big Island Slack Key Music Festival yesterday and it was amazing! Great music & food & full of Aloha - only $5 to get in. Top name performers : Cyril Pahanui, Sean Robbins, John Keawe, etc ! The sad thing is no one was there; we were embarrassed about the lack of support for the performers ( same thing last year! ) ! So sad ...we're afraid they'll stop this great event!

I went to it about 7 years or so ago. It was less than half full then. I was shocked as I thought it was great and enjoyed it immensely. Even Ledward was there.

There is basically a festival, party, concert, cultural class, exhibit, food event, every day here on this island somewhere. Also, yesterday was a big beach day, the beaches were packed. That is the crazy thing around here, there are plenty of brochures, handouts, and web sites with calendars and events but it's difficult to find specific events and exactly when and where, then there is the problem of remembering which one to go to.

The venue is very very very uncomfortable. This is an art form that needs support from the community and we have some great artists, but they need to move this to another location where the seats are not made out of concrete.

probably no one there cause no one posted about it. Never heard about it... 5 bucks is chump change for a good music. I would have gone if known about it.

This seems to be the unchanging thing about the slack key festival - 1) there's an amazing lineup of great performers, practically for free; and 2) it's held in a place with awful acoustics, literally painful seating, and it's barely promoted so hardly anyone knows it's going on.

They could do what a nearby theatre did. They tore out the old seats, replaced them with couches and comfortable chairs from Salvation Army, etc., and hung tapestries created by local artists to deaden the echo. Now it's a really fun venue to kick back and listen to music, local plays, and comedy shows.
The Pono Grill is another, mostly restaurant seating with a few couches, and the place is packed when good music comes in, as you can see in the video on the other posting. Make it comfortable and "homey", and the people will come.

It's not even held at a theater though, it's at the Afook-Chinen civic center. Concrete slab steps for seats. If they held it at the Palace or outdoors somewhere I'm sure it would have much bigger attendance.

Yeah the seats are hard. Bring a cushion. The venue has an almost outdoor feel. I liked it. I suppose they could find a way to improve the acoustics. Being open air like it kinda is I don't think much cloth type stuff would work. When I went it was rainy and cool. I had a great time. The food available was pretty good too.
