Who would represent Puna?
#31
I'm not always happy with Ruderman, but at least to this moment he seems to listen to his constituents.

...after which he is crucified in the press, with claims that his "constituents" would build a geothermal-powered Walmart on Kehene beach.

Politics as usual, I guess.

He wastes a lot of time and tax dollars on ridiculous positions. He is also a very slow learner. There was a geology presentation recently and this whole island is nothing but fractures, down to thousands of feet. He spent a large part of the last session getting a fracking ban put in place, totally ignoring the simple fact it is an oil drilling technique, and failing to understand that.

Name one bill that has funded a solid benefit for Puna. The library and parks stuff was going on before he took office. The local ER room is a study, nothing concrete coming from it. He failed to get funding for a waste water treatment. He tried to take a local special interest and raise it to state legislative level. He lost home rule for Hawaii county. All he shows is being a stubborn rock-head that is also a poor sport.

If you want to keep politics a popularity game, then so be it. He is the best candidate for absolutely no change for Puna.

So long as the State keeps Puna barefoot, we can expect no better from any other candidate, but we can (and will) probably do worse.

"Why all this hate for Ruderman?"

I like Russel Ruderman.

I don't agree with him on a number of issues, but as a human being I like him.
I think he is honest in that he doesn't compromise his position to please this person or that. I have learned just because I don't agree with someone that doesn't make them my enemy. It is always possible they are right and I am wrong. (unlikely but possible)

Russel seems to be the type of man who votes his conscious even if it costs him votes. Too many politicians put their wet finger in the air and vote which ever way the wind is currently blowing.
Do we really want a government directed by who can throw the biggest tantrum?

I noticed at the last forum Russel scolded a heckler who would obviously be one of his supporters and she stopped her cackling. That shows a certain strength of character and good manners which many people don't notice, but I respect.

The proof will be tested over the next couple years to the next election. Right now, Onishi is getting millions into Kea'au, Russell is getting a few tens of thousands into Pahoa. The price of emotionalism and popularity in politics is determined by coin into citizens' pockets. Waning influence leads to less coin. Southeast Puna doesn't know what it wants, so that is what it will get. Think about HPP with 8,000 total lots, 3,000 with residences, 10,000 people. Now, take the old standard of doubling in 10 years. Number of lots don't change, maybe the population doubles to 20,000. All cramped into totally private property having its own responsibility for roads and infrastructure. Carry on laughing, hahaha.

Pahoated,
Do you understand that Onishi's district is within Ruderman's, and that both the senate and house have to approve each funding? There is not a penny that can be attributed to Onishi that Ruderman doesn't deserve equal credit for. And you are incorrect, no one was fighting for a library or medical center this year or any recent year except Ruderman. They may have been ideas for a long time, but only Ruderman introduced it or fought for it. And I wonder what you mean by 'losing home rule,'... did we lose that and only you know about it?
And, isn't there enough to discuss about the current election? Ruderman's not even running this year, if that info is correct.

PT,
By now we all know you don't like Rudderman, but try to understand how politics works. Rudderman was a first term member of the Senate, that means no real clout through committee chairmanship or other percs that come from being there a long time. On the other hand, we have Senators and Representatives who have been in place forever, who have that clout, and don't use it for the benefit of Puna, or even Hawaii County.

Ruderman is a state senator, not a representative. If he was a representative, he'd be up for reelection as the House is elected for 2-year terms, the Senate for 4.

LOL!!! Hell, Ruderman isn't even up for election this year!

PTed - you might want to do some homework on how CIP and GIS funding is done and how they are allocated. As for "...getting a few tens of thousands into Pahoa." I am guessing that you haven't seen the latest appropriations and funding releases that have come under Ruderman's watch: almost $4 million has been released and over a $110 million in direct district appropriations. But then again, maybe you don't.

The library and parks were all but dead issues in the district until Ruderman truly fought for them. As for
home rule" - WTF are you talking about? Please give a single citation to where anything even remotely close to losing home rule has happened.

I get you don't like Ruderman for whatever reason, but being dishonest and/or purposely ignorant of the facts in your criticism and debate on the issues appears to speak to a bigger need on your part for some unknown reason.

How did this thread get to be about Rudderman, who's not even running? Oh yeah, Pahoated with his blatant misinformation and kneejerk antagonism. Thanks Dude. Can we get back to this year's election?
