Campaign ethics
#11
Did everyone see the article in the 6-25-14 edition of the Big Island Weekly titled "Talented People: Tiffany Edwards Hunt". This full page article is basically a political advertisement for her candidacy for County Council, District 5. It goes into detail as to her qualifications, desires, and plans to be a new Council member.

Apparently this article was written by a peer journalist who Tiffany knows well, as a journalist herself.

This article is totally unethical and inappropriate in that it supports and suggests endorsement of a political candidate. This is very unfair to the other candidates running in District 5 who could be just as qualified. It also was unethical to have the article written and then published in an Island wide journal. Unfortunately, in the newspaper media arena, equal time does not enter into the formula so the paper(s) do not have to print corresponding futures on the other candidates.

I do wonder if this article is in violation of the campaign regulations in that it sure looks like a political advertisement that I must assume was not paid for by the Tiffany campaign organization..

Kalakoa, not as far as the Fed law is concerned. The only legal workarounds were those listed.

But if you have evidence of any such loopholes or other workarounds, please do tell.

"This article is totally unethical and inappropriate in that it supports and suggests endorsement of a political candidate."

Newspapers regularly endorse specific candidates, it is a long tradition in the newspaper industry. Usually right before an election they even publish a list of endorsed candidates chosen by the editorial board. This article was in line with that tradition.

It may be one of those things that varies from state to state.

It doesn't matter, in the US, surplus or unspent or excess campaign funds are against the law for personal use. There are multiple allowable uses of unspent campaign funds, the default being it can be contributed to the party treasury.

This is simple government law. Why are you unable to comprehend this? It is clearly detailed in the state Attorney General campaign laws document:
Prohibited Use of Campaign Funds Statute 11-382

The Big Island Weekly is not endorsing any candidate at this time, and probably will not be. The powers to be of the B.I.W. agreed that this article was inappropriate but are taking the position of journalistic privilege in not correcting their mistake in publishing the article.

"The powers to be of the B.I.W. agreed that this article was inappropriate ..." Did you mean powers that be? Can you cite a source for this?

You do know who owns the Big Island Weekly, and the history Tiffany has with that corporation, don't you?

I know BIW is owned by Stephens' Media and they employed Tiffany (mentioned in article) and she quit (not mentioned in article). What concerns me is that Le'a Gleason, author of the BIW article, had worked for Tiffany. She was on the Big Island Chronicle team for 2012 election coverage, and nowhere in the article does she disclose that.

BIW article mentions former positions Tiffany held as laurels, but for example doesn't say that the position with Emily didn't last out the term, even though it supposedly primed Tiffany for representing the district.

Newpapers do endorse candidates, but when they do so, it's standard to list all the candidates, say something about them, and then pick one and explain why. None of the other candidates are even mentioned by name in this piece.

The article was to me unintentionally amusing when it quoted Tiffany saying what a shame it is that a small business cannot open (for three years) because of County bureaucracy and red tape, and she will work to stop this blockage. This is the same person who drove to Kona and urged others to support her, to testify and insist on enforcing any and all red tape that would prevent a competing small business to open next door to her.

I'm also mystified why on one hand Le'a emphasizes Tiffany's education and professional credits, and then proceeds to quote Tiffany saying "gonna" and "wanna" more than once. It's such a mixed message. I can only think she is trying to sound folksy and one of the people.

Kathy has accused me of being biased for Tiffany, and if that means I support her, she's right. What I'd like to point out is Kathy's bias against Tiff.

Way back when...... Kathy became the target of the cyberbully "The Lack" and was featured in some disgusting pornographic cartoons. Tiffany at that time defended Kathy and by doing so, placed herself in "The Lack's" crosshairs, becoming his new target. It was Tiffany's legal action that eventually stopped Lackey. Kathy fails to mention any of this in the context of Tiffany's character. Kathy was a regular contributor to BIC at that time, and not once commented about Tiffany's grammar, punctuation, or lack of professionalism.

Everything was lovey-dovey with Kathy/Tiff until Kathy started posting ridiculous speculation supporting the idea of a "Kalapana Hawaiian Mafia conspiracy" in the Brittany and I'o murder case.

Tiff called BS on Kathy, and had the full support of Brittany's family, the police, and all of the real evidence.

Kathy has become Tiffany's grammar cop and chief antagonist ever since.

Tiff is by no means perfect, but has far more public experience and credibility than the Tinfoil Brigade that's running in District 5. Any comments by Kathy need to be seen in the context of her and Tiffany's history.

Trying to sound "folksy"?....... Really? Why don't you mention the resurgence of Rubella and other once eradicated diseases as a result of the "anti-vaccine" movement. A movement championed by RJ, who actually wrote legislation supporting it while working for Emily.

Exactly. Tiffany the hypocrite.

I realize that Tiffany is by no means perfect and that is why one has to question her qualifications to be a Councilperson. You talk about the "Tinfoil Brigade that's running in District 5", well she is one of them and maybe the heavy duty type. WRT experience, Roxanne Hampton has as much or more experience and has probably made more contributions to the Pahoa area, over the last 15 or so years, than has Tiffany.
