Yes Gypsy that Sun was nice and the waves sure we're impressive to an east coast boy. And those lava rocks in the sea are like Snot covered bowling balls with sharp edges. Thanks so much for showing me around and for the Hawaiian style fishing lesson. It will take me awhile to be as brave fishing on the rocks in the surf as you and your boy. And maybe some felt souled shoes.

I just went out to the greenhouse and noticed my overflow bypass had fallen off (it leads to a tank of tilapia that waters the greenhouse). Then I noticed that the overflow was hardly running. Then I saw the water overflowing the edge of the tank.

So I got to learn how to re-start the overflow (hold it underwater and rotate until bubbles stop coming up.) The hard part was getting it back into place on the tank edge without losing the prime. Now it's gushing into the tilapia tank. I wonder if the whole thing got knocked out of whack by a cloudburst; this is the first time I've ever had this problem.

It was gushing.

Getting my first view of the stars in Hawaii, caught a few glimpses the first 8 nights but with it clearing tonight I'm starting to see the night sky Hawaii is known for,yes it is beautiful.

Ok that was short lived. Kinda like those brief periods of Sun over the last few days, it's here then it's gone.

fishenjim - here's a suggestion, but unfortunately not the right time for it.

In April or May, on a clear and moonless evening, drive out north of Hilo on Hwy 19 to Laupahoehoe. After the first two gulches there's a small rest area on the side of the highway where you can stop and stare out at the ocean. In April and May, the Galactic centre is rising in the evening and as long as the sky is dark you will get a view that will blow your mind away.

You'll need to wait a few minutes for your eyes to become dark adapted, but it is worth it.

Or you could head up towards Mauna Kea. The view at the VIS is stunning and actually better than the summit as your eyes work better at 9,000 feet.

Want to do the mauna kea trip so bad the photos I've seen of sunrise at the summit are incredable. Not to mention the night sky photos.

Just to make you jealous, fishenjim:

But the view of the night sky at the VIS, a few thousand feet below on a clear and moonless night is best if you want to see stars and the Milky Way. And the rest area near Laupahoehoe.

Wow great work Tom you have quite the eye to get such a great shot. I liked the comments. Looks like science fiction to me to. Is that planet in the Degaba system?

Thanks, fishenjim. Not sure where you are, but another place you could try for a star-filled night is down the bottom of Paradise Park via Paradise Drive. Turn right at the bottom (by the stop signs) and you'll be on the cliffs. It's completely dark and on a moonless and cloudless night can be quite stunning, and is, of course, not as far to drive if you're in Puna. Bring a flashlight, though, and beware that some odd characters camp there.

Not sure how long the dark nights will continue, though. One or two new people here would like to implement street lights at each corner and that would make it much harder to view the most beautiful view of the Hawaiian night sky, but at least we'll be safe in our houses, just like everywhere else that has street lights.
