Big Island Incinerator
#1
In the Aloha+ Challenge article in the paper today, our Mayor is included in the leaders who have signed on to this initiative. Item #4 is: "Waste Reduction: Reduce the solid waste stream prior to disposal by 70 percent through source reduction, recycling, bioconversion and landfill diversion methods."
The proposed waste-to-energy project, being pushed by our Mayor, will require all the islands trash, including green waste, to be burned.
Which is it? Do we want waste reduction, as announced in this PR event, or do we want to burn, baby, burn?

The incinerator has the best potential for kickbacks.
Assume the best and ask questions.

This is the operative phrase in your post:
"...as announced in this PR event..."

That was about PR, not about what is actually intended.

Please come to the council meeting on Friday July 18th and SUPPORT resolution 452. Council Meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. OR submit testimony via email before noon on July 17th to: Counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us

http://records.co.hawaii.hi.us/Weblink8/DocView.aspx?dbid=0&id=815249

RIDES AVAILABLE

Resolution 452-14: Urges the Administration to withdraw Request for Proposal No. 3044 regarding the future of solid waste management for the County and issue a new Request for Proposal to provide for the eligibility of those entities or a combination of entities which seek to maximize the output of compostables and generally maximize the highest value for each component of the waste stream. The details of the current RFP effectively limited proposals to a single-proposer massive waste-to-energy system approach instead of allowing for teams of experts in their field.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS AGENDA ITEM: PLEASE TESTIFY
Testify In Person – the Kona Council Chambers – West Hawai‘i Civic Center.
Via Videoconference – At the Waimea Council Office; the North Kohala Video Conferencing Site in the old Bank of Hawai’i Building in Kapa’au; the Hilo Council Chambers at – 25 Aupuni Street; the Pahoa Neighborhood Facility and the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Community Center.

Public testimony (1 copy) may also be submitted before 12:00 noon on the business day prior to the meeting by fax: to (808) 961-8912 or email: Counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us or by mail: County Clerk’s Office at 25 Aupuni Street, Hilo, Hawai’i 96720.

Sounds like the anti crowd came out in force. Any impact or are we still planning on burning our garbage?

People certainly did come out in force -- as this article indicates http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/loc...ncinerator...

the numbers were only surpassed by the diversity and the distribution across all of the island.

Stage 2 of this flawed RFP will proceed (and probably would have if the Resolution had passed).
The 3 finalists in Stage 2 are all engaged in mass burn incineration as their major activity. The new Council will have the next and final say sometime next year.

What about chucking the (non-toxic) trash into the volcano? [8D]

Many people have suggested this -- all in jest, of course, since no serious person who actually lives on this island would do so.

Maybe it's a little late to ask this but for any candidates for County Council, What ideas do you have for dealing with County of Hawai'i trash as an alternative to incineration?

I already voted my conscience but for anyone looking to define positions between different candidates this might be a good question.
