FYI:

A public ceremony will be held next week for the groundbreaking of what is described as the biggest recreational project in the history of the county.

The $22.3 million first phase of the Pahoa District Park project will more than double the size of the Pahoa park, which currently contains Pahoa’s pool, community center, skate park and ball fields.

The groundbreaking will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the park.

Nan Inc., the contractor awarded the bid for the district park’s first phase, is scheduled to start clearing and grading the site on Aug. 4, said Department of Parks and Recreation spokesman Jason Armstrong.

Facilities to be built over the next year include a covered play court building; two lighted baseball fields; two multi-purpose fields, one of which will be lighted for nighttime use; a keiki playground, concession building, new comfort station, ADA accessible walkways and parking areas.

When completed, the Pahoa District Park will cost an estimated $54 million.

If NAN Inc got the job does this mean they will slow down their work on Keaau-Pahoa Highway because their resources are stretched too thin?

$54 million for a park and 45,000 Puna residents is $1,200 for every man/woman/child in the district!

This will be another in a series of government contracts where the actual delivered product will actually be worth about 60% of the contract price... meaning we can expect $32M worth of park for $54M.

And they say there's no money for anything.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Kind of like the retail "shrinkage factor" Rob.
The level of acceptance of this- shall we call it "inefficiency" -
is mind bending.
How is that 40% allocated do we think?
Does it least stay in the local economy?

Except the money is being borrowed so we don't have to pay it. <insert laughing facepalm emoji here>

I was shown the plans for phase one and told the price was 23 million. Is the larger price for the whole project and how many more phases?

Well if you calculate the price based on the actual number of people in the district who is actually going to USE the park, the number isn't $1,200, it's closer to 1,200,000.00.

But don't worry, just because a small fraction of people who are currently living in the area are going to use the facilities, doesn't mean that many generations of people aren't going to use them... it's not like the park is downhill from an erupting volcano or anything.

I just wish they had a nice walking path... Oh well, something is better than nothing I guess. Hope it works out and makes a lot happy. Probably won't be using it much.
