Groundbreaking - Pahoa District Park
#31
"Both phases are expected to cost $54 million"

Only $22M in the current new debt, so there's another $32M yet to be loaned.

Children who play in the park could very well have grandchildren still paying for it.

It gives them something to do and a purpose in life.

The only thing that makes sense is our planners are brainless.

54 million for a park. 5.4 million would seem appropriate.

The only thing that makes this bearable is the natural beauty of this island, without that, we'd be in an insane asylum.

Two lit baseball fields? I've rarely seen anyone at the two baseball fields we already have. A lot of acreage for baseball. I have not seen the plan but I hope it includes soccer fields, a sport that is growing fast and can be played by all ages cheaply. I trust that is the multi-purpose field. Our kids deserve some facilities.

BTW, my son is a 26 year-old contest winning skate-boarder and he says the skate park in Pahoa is the best design he's ever ridden. So, cynics, it is not all corruption, bloat and incompetence. I am optimistic. And the roundabout will be well-designed and done soon. Right.

Of course not. What does that have to do with anything? This project is really about keeping clueless county bureaucrats looking useful and lining the pockets of unionized, politically connected contractors and suppliers. Billy Kenoi knows who his friends are.

My husband used to work for a large parks department in their horticulture division. The designers drove the plant guys crazy, one clueless planner wanted to plant redwoods so they would shade a downtown plaza all winter long in the Pacific Northwest. During rare winter sunny days the office workers hung out in the plaza like lizards on a rock, soaking up sun, and this guy thought evergreen trees that would grow to 150 feet were a good idea!!!!!!

This park got approved and planned during Fred Blas' reign, and is a reflection of his priorities. For him, parks meant ball fields. So an expensive park with a disproportionate amount of the facilities going to a narrow audience is Fred's legacy in Puna.

For those that say they have not seen the plan. CLICK ON THE LINK !
Then, click on the illustration to make it bigger !

By the way, after doing that, the plan WILL STILL suck.

Peter - multi-purpose fields - are also SOCCER fields.. just sayin'...

Puna is always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Puna is losing out on capitalizing it as the Fight Capital of Hawaii. There could be a big cage match arena with seating for a couple thousand. People fighting on the street will be required to move their fight to the cage match, possibly no holds barred to the death. Of course, there will be friendly local wagering, all in good fun.

doesn't really matter the best thing the park had was a skate park anyway that was designed by the park goes and skaters. Doesn't the high school/middle school already have a baseball field? The park in Hawaiian beaches also has TWO baseball fields... How many baseball fields does pahoa need?

The plan does suck but what else is new.
