Candidate Forum - Puna / Tonight
#11
After looking at the video and thinking about it for about as long as it took my morning chai to brew, the real tragedy here is this will hit the state and local news, maybe even go viral globally, and just give all the people in power who dismiss Puna yet another reason to not take the needs of this district seriously.

We need people who can act like grownups to represent us, and I will give Tiffany credit for grace under fire. What do you do when your turn for concluding statements comes right after something like that? She had about 60 seconds to decide to either stick to her prepared remarks, ignoring the whole thing, or speak off the cuff and respond to what was said. She did a little of both, but did so with dignity in a difficult situation.

My bet is there will be a runoff between Paleka and Hunt and we will finally get a chance to hear the candidates talk about issues.

@TomK. Sorry... slept in. So yeah, the video pretty much says it. She kept yelling for five or ten minutes outside, while Tiffany was giving her closing, Yeah, after that, Tiffany was supposed to give her closing. So Tiffany used her time to own up to the roast, and claimed it was all in good fun. I realize that RJ is RJ, but when she slammed that paper down I could see how maybe some folks could think it was about to get physical. Love the way little Fran Pueo put herself between the two "combatants."

So what's the deal about this roast? In another thread I questioned the thickness of Tiffany's skin, but it' starting to feel like everybody in Puna is so proper and precious that they'd just burst into a million pieces if you disrupt their delicate sensibilities. I poked my head into the roast, but couldn't stay because they were serving alcohol and I was with my underage niece. The minute or so I witnessed was indeed raucous. It just wasn't too terribly funny. But the roast was not by invite only. Other candidates could have attended and it was advertised for over a week prior, so this idea that it was some secret thrashing of the other candidates and the people of Puna is just silly. And yes, Tiffany owns a paper. And yes, it's probably not the most balanced news organ in all the land. But when RJ pointed the finger of shame and shouted "j'accuse!" because a newspaper dared to print words about a politician without first obtaining that politician's permission... well, that tickled me.

Nobody in the council 5 race helped themselves yesterday. Except maybe Tiffany, because she didn't insist that the police be called. Although we'll have to wait and see if she does something silly like call a lawyer, or opine in BIC. (Just let it go, Tiffany...) And she did own up to the roast, and admitted what it was. A letting off of steam. Perhaps ill advised. But oh well, this isn't suddenly proof that as council person she will kill puppies for fun or something.

The good news is, it's almost over folks.

Oh!....... the humanity! It was like watching the Hindenburg go down in flames. I agree with Ms Gray; A two person General Election race will allow both candidates to focus more on the issues, and less on the peripherals.

If something like a roast is advertised by a candidate, is it to be assumed that other candidates are invited? Dr. Lozano hosted a Meet and Greet for his candidacy, were the other candidates supposed to know that they were invited. I really don't think so. The other candidates did not attend, at least the ones I talked to, because they were not invited and did not want to assume or presume. They were being appropriate to the context.

And you are right, it was not humorous and it was in poor taste and poor judgment on Ms. Edwards-Hunt's part. Now really, for a candidate to put herself into a position of dissing other people in front of a live audience with alcohol served, while in a campaign to WIN PEOPLE'S TRUST and VOTE, I would question her judgment. AND THAT MEANS I WOULD QUESTION HER JUDGMENT IN MORE SERIOUS MATTERS.

Doesn't anyone find it offensive that she would read your posts she calls eTRASH, to a live audience to insult the author. It is NOT about thik skin, it is about what is appropriate behavior for a candidate having to solve and decide serious issues.

It's still 2 weeks, you haven't seen anything yet. This is only round 3 in the great Hampton vs Hunt island grudge match. Hampton has delivered a flurry of sharp blows but they only seemed to sting the much larger Hunt, who followed with body blow after body blow to the slim framed Hampton. Hampton wobbles, then recovers partially, enough to deliver a jarring upper cut to Hunt's square jaw. The punch causes Hunt to stumble backward, stunned and confused. Hampton, getting weaker, tries to rush in for a series of kidney punches. Hunt stops Hampton by holding her hand on Hampton's head, delivering a right cross squarely to Hampton's jaw. Hampton nearly goes down, recovers enough to throw up her hands and forfeit the round with a series of expletives. The next round is coming up.

ROFL pahoated. Maybe you should be the emcee for the next match, or just be the announcer doing running commentary.

pelelani, like you say, it's not about thin skin or thick. I agree with snorkle that being oversensitive isn't the way to go. But I agree with you that a public performance at a billed campaign party (or a forum) is something to look at square on to see what it says about the candidate.

In the forum, RJ (and I like RJ's willingness to speak out) still make a big error in judgment by blowing up and slamming something down, and not responding to the moderator. She let her temper get the best of her. I can see how it could happen because Tiffany's smugness is tempting to shake it up, but it's never a win to lose your temper in front of the camera. Human but not politic.

I don't think Tiffany's response was grace under fire, sorry to disagree Carol. It was easy to see that she was being handed a golden chance to appear the dignified reasonable one and gain the advantage that way. As for shrugging her exercise in mockery off as humor, the humor doesn't stand up to scrutiny as harmless fun, but most people there hadn't seen it. So it was easy for Tiffany to characterize what she did in a good light, while appearing to be taking responsibility, without acknowledging her meanness of behavior.

Grace under fire, in my book, is not copping to engaging in some self-described light and harmless humor. It would be to seize the moment and say, you're right, I didn't treat you or the other candidates with the respect you deserve. Show that she can reflect on the criticism (she's had time), and grow from it.

Kathy,
Play the time line in your head: RJ unexpectedly explodes and makes a lot of personal and political attacks on Tiffany, Tiffany then has virtually no time to gather thoughts or decide how to handle the situation, she wanders around a little in her response and then gets back to her talking points. I would guess that in hindsight she is thinking of all the other things she could or should have said, and maybe what she wishes she hadn't said, but she stayed calm and acted like a grown up, and didn't get sucked into RJ's type of behavior.

While Tiffany knew she was going to have to give closing remarks, she cannot have known she was going to have to follow a diatribe containing personal attacks. Clearly the attacks Sativa made on her father's service really have been bothering her, and maybe politically it would have been better if she hadn't brought that up, but I felt like she was being a real person trying to respond to someone really dumping on her in an unexpected venue. I have no idea how I would have handled the situation, or if I could have even put a coherent sentence together. Think about how flummoxed you felt when you ended up being handed the mic at a forum, could you think fast enough on your feet to give the perfect response right then in Tiffany's shoes? I know I couldn't.

I sure wish we could see some scientific polling data for the Big Island races.

Leave it to RJ to give Tiffany a chance to look like an adult rather than what she is, someone who staged a mean, childish bash fest mislabeled as a "roast." RJ can't control herself, and Tiffany doesn't know how to respectfully deal with those who disagree with her. The fact that they both served as legislative aides to Emily Naeole adds an ironic twist to the whole sorry story. They are both unworthy to serve Puna in any official capacity, IMHO.

Responding to several posts, so I'll cut and paste the old fashioned way. First, pelelani writes, "And you are right, (DaVinci) it was not humorous and it was in poor taste and poor judgment on Ms. Edwards-Hunt's part." Just to be clear, All I said was that it wasn't funny. I don't think the roast was in poor taste or showed poor judgment. If it had been funny, (like pahoated's ringside banter... wow, LOL) I'd be fine with it. If it costs Tiffany votes, and she loses, well, that's her lesson learned. But we have a rich history in this country of skewering those who would govern us. Read the Federalist papers. Read the Hearst papers. We trash on each other. It's the American way. If you don't like it, don't vote for her, and feel free in this forum to rip her a new one. But beware of overreaching, because if you try to sell us on Tiffany the puppy killer, (or Frannie the puppy killer, or Dr Roy the puppy killer...) then I'm gonna' call you out.

@csgray. I do concur with you. One hundred percent. I can't say with any assurance that I'd have been able to take the mic after someone jumped at me like that and done anything remotely civil with it. Love her or hate her, Tiffany managed that moment. It could not have been easy. None of us knew if RJ was going to actually attack Tiffany physically or not. RJ slammed the newspaper down an inch from her face. Tiffany gestured to the moderator to please step in and protect her from physical harm. Fran Pueo also felt the need to step between them physically. Not joking around here, it was an unimaginably unprofessional and uncivilized thing to do. RJ's freedom of speech might extend all the way to the end of Tiffany's nose, but taking us there, right up to the edge of violence and then walking away was beyond the pale. Schoolyard bullies do that, not those who would aspire to govern us.

And as others on this thread have suggested, it will be this video that gets played a thousand times, and everyone else in Hawaii will shake their heads slowly and mutter, "those Punatics..." Not the proudest moment for our district.
