Groundbreaking - Pahoa District Park
#41
The park in Hawaiian beaches also has TWO baseball fields

Wouldn't those be "private"?

an expensive park with a disproportionate amount of the facilities going to a narrow audience

This is basically true of all works in Puna, back to the original subdivisions. Nothing to see here, move along...

baseball fields make ball players...... we need them in Puna!

...or we can just follow innercity America and not make baseball fields close by to the kids... thus inner city is barely represented in Major League Baseball.... there are far more players from a couple small Carribean islands in MLB than from American innercities (dominated by basketball courts)... because these islands MAKE and support Baseball Fields!

common sense would say... Soccer can be played on any open grass lot, baseball/softball needs a special field

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

$54M ??? I'm not so sure the combined physical infrastructure of Pahoa is worth $54M...

They will be funding lots of light pollution I see. And a 'concessions building'? BUILDING? Are you kidding me?

How much land will the park cover? Maybe as much as the parking lot I hope?

At least all the buildings will be individually architected, engineered, permitted, contracted.... Maybe $200+ per sq/ft? $300?

This is a great idea that government at its worst will ruin and rack up huge debt in the process.

Yes, but certain pockets will be well filled in the process - and it is the process afterall that matters most. I suspect a sizable chunk will make its way into Hawaii Democratic Party coffers.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Sewers anyone?- that would help economic development and quality of life around Pahoa.
Wonder what 54 million would have done for that project?
Probably take a generation to do though.

Folks are not taking into account the growth that Puna is experiencing, and will continue to experience in the future. This is where everyone is coming to - from mainland transplants to those who are fed up with Oahu. Unless the flow is enough to make folks pause (doubtful), here is the new future of large population growth in Hawai'i.

Does anyone know if the disc golf course is still on the table for the adjoining forest lands?

This only makes me more suspicious: when has County EVER been proactive?

There was a time some years back when, after a series of town meetings were held, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was entered into with Parks & Rec on the 56 acre park parcel. It required zero funding from the county and included a walking riding trail around the perimeter, a professionally run town camp ground and a few acres of a Hawaiian cultural village (off grid).

The camp ground would have required about three acres and was intended to add eco tourism for an economic boost for Pahoa Village.

Anyway, after the MOU was signed we arranged to bring a surveyor in (at no expense to the CoH) and Parks & Rec refused to allow access onto the property. Hard to survey or do anything else without access.

All of this would have left sufficient acreage for all the super expensive stuff Billy Kenoi now wants to do. But as usual the village of Pahoa was thwarted. Typical county. Pockets will get lined.
Assume the best and ask questions.
