Uh, hello? 3/4 of the population of the state lives there as well (and another big chunk on Maui and Kona, which are not far behind in cost), so it's not just local bias of the paper, it's how it's weighted by where the people are.
It's the Big Island, and Puna in particular, that's unusually cheap for the state. Hilo has the lowest food costs (both in stores and in the availability of abundant, inexpensive locally-grown produce at farmers markets), cheapest gas (yes, it's true, aside from Costco on Oahu), and lowest housing cost.
And for the record, many of us
don't chose to live on Oahu; I would move back to the Big Island in an instant if I could!

We also all know that Puna needs only 1/10th that much (which by coincidence, is the Puna median income), around $12,200 per year, to be happy.
Do you really believe someone making $12,200 a year is happy?
Although, they would get their $300+ per month in EBT and a nice new Obama phone and free medical insurance...

yes. people making less are happy. happiness is relative and hawaii has other positives thrown in. the weather can be tolerated without air-conditioning or central heating. shorts and slippahs are considerably cheaper than boots and overcoats. food is grown and picked and shared. water is clean and comes straight out of the sky
people are friendly and care for each other. there are daily, breathtaking vistas that in turn take you to a place of utter insignificance (try standing on mauna kea on a clear night) to being so part of this planet, such an inescapable oneness, that you could burst with it.

I don't have to do any google searching to know that your statement is not only false but makes very little sense:
"All studies on happiness, show 50% is genetic, 25% is what you choose to do daily (exercise etc) and the other 25% is what you choose to think."

To whom it may concern.
The grand children are not members of this forum.
They only read this forum as it was suggested by their teacher as
just one sight to write about on summer break about life in Puna.
The grandchildren are nero diverse as opposed to nero typical in how they think and live.
Gifted and talented would be better terminology in this case.
We as their grand parents review most of what they access but can not always be on top of everything they look at.
We do have parental controls set up,but some things slip by.
Any one world wide can read this forum - to post though, one needs to be an approved member.
We are happy to be members ( free ) of Punaweb .
As for happiness, life itself is a blessing.
Good health trumps any form of kala ( money ).
We are happy just to be happy.
Life is a blessing
