Commute to/from Honolulu?
#1
Is anyone effectively commuting two or more days a week from Hilo to Honolulu?

My current employer needs me to be in upcoming meetings a few days each week on base (business process consulting). Generally these meetings will be from 9am to 3pm, so instead of doing overnight stays and taking a cab from hotel to the base all the time, thought it might be advantageous to simply purchase the Hawaiian "Freedom" plan which gives you 60 flights and no advance booking requirements. I figure on a 7am flight over and 5pm flight back. I can get free rides to/from HNL airport to the base. I will have an occasional meeting on Maui too, but it doesn't appear realistic to try and commute there due to the limited direct flights.

Sometimes the meetings will be two days in a row, but most will be a day or two apart. Either way I go about it, they will pay travel, but I was trying to decide if it was realistic to commute this way - I know there are people who do it.

Many grad student at UH do, (some scholarships actually include the travel costs)
Some get the travel plan from Hawaiian that locks in flight costs, but is a buy first thing) I did it for just a little bit as I was gearing up for administrating a grant here. HNL on a daily basis is a bit of a pain, but ITO is a breeze, so luckily mornings are good!

Also had a USFWS friend that did the opposite, until he finally got a position back on this island... If you ask me, it beats driving to Kona & back, and many do that!
