The Positive Side of Double Hurricanes
#1
I am a glass-half-empty-and-by-the-way-this-glass-is-friggin'-plastic-and-tastes-like-it kind of guy, but am making a real effort to change that. To that end, I thought it might be useful to stop fretting over what appears to be a double-hurricane aimed straight for Puna and to look on the bright side of such an event. Here are a few positive ways of looking at it. You may have some of your own before the power goes out and we are plunged into darkness.

1. This is gonna blow those little coqui MF'ers from here to Kingdom Come.
2. I get to decide the election! As I am pretty sure I am the only person who timely submitted an absentee vote with an unspoiled ballot and since voting in person will be impossible, MY BALLOT DECIDES THE ELECTION!!!
3. Albezia removal --- done!
4. Sand returns to Kehena, brought there on the wind from Shipman beach!
5. Unwanted yard gnomes -- gone!
6. An Act of God is about to remove from Hilo that horrible truck with all those crazy signs. Ironic, huh?!
7. Distraction from obsessive volcano monitoring!
8. All malos -- skyward!

Your turn.

When one of those political election signs gets blown through your window, at least you'll know where to send the repair bill.

Kelena,
Do you have a safe place to be, or are you planning to just hunker down on the cliffs and hope a sea turtle doesn't blow through your windows? We have room, the house is a bit of a tree house, but the ohana unit downstairs is pretty protected and our dogs will be happy to have another knee to lean on. Let me know if you need directions, BYOB H2O and whatever else you need.

All those spare, just can't throw them away, scraps of plywood finally being put to good use .. Free pressure wash too.

Area where they were sitting ... Auto swept.

Still nice out, gotta keep going before too dark.

Ultimate, slack off from work excuse. Even better than non-visible injury.

At least everyone believes it.

I know some trees needing removal and have fingers crossed they blow the right direction if they go.

Pond refilled and water exchanged.

I might read an actual book in the down time between moments of terror.

Thank you, Carol. I am very grateful for the offer and hope you are getting around better. At the moment, I am planning on hunkering down here by the cliffs. I guess it is possible that we will be evacuated -- I don't know how they handle hurricanes. But my plan is to stay here. Maybe like that guy who refused to leave Mount St. Helens I am underestimating the danger. It is a little eerie down here and the ocean is a little noisy. And there are not a lot of people here at the moment. Maybe Flossie (the second one) is interfering with my ability to assess just how bad this could be. Right now these little louvered windows don't really seem like they would stop very much. I am hoping for a quick jag to the South for Miss Iselle.

Bought 2 cases of wine for the double whammy and it doesn't need refrigeration when the power goes out ! Smile

Kalena - I very much doubt there will be an evacuation call. I think that would only happen for a much stronger hurricane. I am also hunkering down quite close to where you are, but probably not quite as close to the ocean.

Another positive - watching the online video on cnn.com about the hurricanes approaching Hawaii. Apparently, "mauka" means "moving up the hill" and is pronounced "maa-ooka". The things you learn on CNN. It's like the time I watched one of the science reporters telling us that comets come to us from the edge of the universe. They are always good for a bit of a laugh and giggle and generally raising the spirits.

I bought a half dozen bottles of wine (for the discount [Smile] ) and more white than red.

I believe that makes me an optimist. (White wine must be chilled in my book).

I found some champagne that's been in a reasonably cool cupboard for 15 years and put it to chill to open in celebration when it's all over. I don't drink champagne, which is why it's been sitting around since someone gave it to me as a wedding present. It's probably spoiled, but again, I'm behaving optimistically ... it might not be.

Kelena, honestly, you might reconsider spending Thursday night in an oceanfront home. I wouldn't do it. Take care.
