Ford, Ruderman: More precincts need redo
#11
Quite interesting...2 notifications for the new election & hurricane info came in the mail today from the Schatz office

ADD: we are in Keaau (though not quite one of the precincts, just a wee bit east)

Did anyone else get these (esp the Hurricane info) & where are you....would be interesting to know how targeted this is...

David M,
I don't have "a boy" in the race. I have a friend who knows the Senator, but I have other friends who know Hanabusa. It's an island, and a lot of people know people.

I did vote for Schatz, but I am not vested in the sense where I would want to see election protocol tweaked to favor him ... or anybody! I think it should be fair to the voters in Puna and to all the other voters.

There were voters shut out in Hamakua, but no one cares about their lost right to vote. Mendo, maybe you should get a heart before you drive north of Hilo. We don't want you here with that attitude.

How silly does it sound to talk that way?

"... Hilopuna - please go see the wizard. Maybe he can give you a heart, which you are clearly in need of.
And until then, please stay out of Puna if this is your attitude toward us. We are sick of being dumped on by your likes."

Two things Mendo;
One/ the comments, including the statistics I quoted, had to do with the actual "walkup" day of, voting. The 40% you referenced was a total vote, combining the mail in's with the walk ups. The referred districts in Puna were well within the range of other, less affected districts regarding walk ups. Keep to the facts, and don't conflate one statistic into another in order to muddy the waters. The question being addressed on THIS topic was whether to extend additional voting opportunities to other, less affected districts.
"..get a heart..". Yeah, well to answer a cheap shot with another, and to continue the literary reference, then you need to get a brain.

Two/ "...stay out of Puna..."
Really!!! You're gonna go provincial and play territorial? My bonafides; I was swimming at Queens Bath and sitting on Kaimu from '74 till they disappeared under lava...I built my business, my whole life in fact, in Puna. I bought land, cleared it, built house, lived off power, the whole "Puna experience". The fact that I live in Hilo now doesn't affect my mindset, which was never as parochial as yours seems to be. Get over yourself...and by the way, learn how to argue* ( as distinct from being argumentative, which you are already somewhat accomplished at)

* "Argue" verb, : to give reasons for or against something : to say or write things in order to change someone's opinion about what is true, what should be done

Won't dignify with a response, other than your reductionism seems to fit into "your girls" style of politics (knife fight in a phone booth)

Well KathyH, you'd sure have to go edit/delete fair number of your posts that are more candidate oriented than voter/process oriented. You won't, of course.

...and the election itself quickly becomes meaningless, basically as I had predicted.

David, I do care about character and ethics in a candidate, always have, so no need to edit posts. I also care about fairness and fair process. There has not been much reason to post about voting procedure in the past, so of course there will not be much to look at in my past posts, and it is a cheap shot to frame your response that way.

If you look back at my posts, you will not see a single post about me taking any position in the Senate race until the last couple days after I sent emails basically encouraging our incumbent Senator to visit the disaster area, which I did solely trying to be helpful.

So it is not reasonable to say Schatz is "my boy," and it's a personal insult to say that my thoughts on fair voting are coming from a place of wanting the candidate I voted for to win at all costs to fairness. And if you look at the record of right now, Senator Schatz has clearly said that whatever is fair to the voters of Puna will be respected by him (fair in this case is in the province of the courts). He did not lobby against Hanabusa's efforts, even though if she prevailed it would not be favorable to him.

I like him because he his an honorable and fair person (and doesn't support the legal use of dogs and cats as food items or put together sweetheart deals with developers to earn a quid pro quo in the real estate market). I don't like Big Pharma that chooses not to develop promising cancer drugs that won't make enough money, and Big Pharma is against Schatz and has bought Hanabusa.)

So there, those are my reasons for my vote. BUT that does not mean I don't support everyone here getting to cast his or her vote, even if someone else wins. Personally I think the governor and Nago gravely erred in not postponing the election. Then we wouldn't have this mess that is unfair to some voters however it plays out.

My candidate related posts to which you refer were not about bending the rules so someone could win. They were about how someone who is not mature enough or ethical enough to hold office is one of the frontrunners, because a lot of people aren't aware of what she is like, and I believe people should know what they're voting for. Completely different situation.

"Well said" or "well argued"? I'd argue the latter!

Quote David M;
"Keep in mind, the current situation favors their boy."

Quote Kathy;
"I don't have "a boy" in the race"

That was indeed well argued; But WTH is she arguing about? Dave never said "her boy".

No criticism here, just confusion.
