Goddess Pele
#41
E Aloha Mai E Pele!

In the coming days, many will go and pay respects to Tutu Pele with ho'okupu, makana, and prayer. Mahalo to those who attempt to embrace our culture, and understand our beliefs in our home land.

For what it's worth, as we kanaka maoli prepare for Tutu's visit, we remember our teachings. Respectfully ask for protection, mercy, and always mahalo our kupuna.

Some will sprinkle Hawaiian salt at each corner of their aina, as prayers/chants are done, for cleansing and protection.

Ti leaf planted at each boundary of your land was supposed to be a "respectful request" of Tutu Pele to please go around.

In the end, it is our belief Tutu Pele created our aina, and thus, can take it back at will.

Prepare yourself for perhaps, a once in a lifetime experience. Some of us have been through this before, and welcome the change Tutu Pele apparently has planned.

This chant will be heard often at Halemaumau for the next few weeks or months.

O Pele, have mercy on us
O lady moving in the form of fire
Your sulk is so great
Yet your lava moves slowly

Your name is famous
Everywhere
We ran with tears From the land we loved

Hi#699;iaka raised in the bosom of Pele
The one that I loved
Lead to her destination
The queen of the earth

The fire glitters
As her lava moves slowly
We turn to the top
To see the unforgettable beauty

This is the end of the song
Answer O Pele to your name
To the heavy heart of the mulititude
Who love the land

Be safe, above all, no matter if you believe or not.

Ho'o mau kau kau! (Get ready!)

Aloha to all.

As Carol has pointed out in the past, Uruguay is the only country in the world not subject to some kind of natural disaster. If there is a UruguayWeb, it's probably one of the only forums in the world that doesn't have posters asking about government assistance in a time of crisis.

punafish : " Any attempt by the County to divert the flow would be a comedy of errors; they can't even design safe intersections here. " Truth.

Again punafish : " I knew buying here was a roll of the dice, that lava could possibly come with the (cheap) deal. Never once did I entertain the thought that the government would come bail me out if the lava crossed the road..." Thank you for speaking for many of us.

I wasn't raised in Hawaii so my belief system doesn't use the same terms as locals. What some may call Pele, I may call Gaia, or Earth. I do not believe earth is a conscious decision making entity, but rather a natural living force that has and always will be balancing itself out.

With that being said, Gaia, or Earth, or Pele, or whatever you choose to name this force, is pissed off. We have seen, all over the planet, a huge increase in natural disasters over the last 10-15 years. Earth is cleansing itself, because it is needed. Scientists all over are no saying we are soon to have an extinction level event - We are at our biospheryical limits. Why this isn't broadcast on every news staion so everyone on earth is more conscious of it, I am not sure. This past storm Isselle and the lava flow is a small part of the bigger picture.

Because it's not true. You think a lump of rocks hurtling through space can be "pissed off"? Animism lives.

Don't worry about the planet Oneself, when it gets bored of its current crop of parasites, we will be wiped away like the annoying little pests that we are.

I nominate San Marino to take Uruguay's place in this factoid.

Again, you are missing the point. As usual, I am pointing to the moon and you are looking at my finger.

If you read the article, its about the impact we are having and the results of those actions.

Being "pissed" is the metaphor to describe those results of our actions.

If humanity does not urgently change its ways, several critical thresholds may be exceeded, beyond which abrupt and generally irreversible changes to the life-support functions of the planet could occur," a press release on the report states.

Some key facts and figures from the report:

Under current models, greenhouse gas emissions could double over the next 50 years, leading to rise in global temperature of 3 degrees Celsius or more by the end of the century.

Indoor air pollution from particulate matter is responsible for nearly 2 million premature deaths annually - including 900,000 deaths in children under the age of five.

Outdoor particulate matter may be responsible for around 3.7 million deaths annually.

Ground-level ozone is responsible for 700,000 respiratory deaths, over 75 per cent of which occur in Asia.

Global economic losses due to reduced agricultural yields caused by air pollution are estimated at US $14-26 billion annually.

The extinction risk is increasing faster for corals than for any other group of living organisms, with the condition of coral reefs declining by 38 per cent since 1980. Rapid contraction is projected by 2050.

Though catches more than quadrupled from the early 1950s to the mid-1990s, they have stabilized or diminished since then - despite increased fishing. In 2000, catches could have been 7-36 percent higher were it not for stock depletion. This translated into economic losses to the value of $4-36 billion.

Water quality in at least parts of most major river systems still fails to meet World Health Organization (standards.

More than 600 million people are expected to lack access to safe drinking water by 2015, while more than 2.5 billion people will lack access to basic sanitation.

By 2030, an estimated $9-11 billion will be spent annually on additional infrastructure to provide sufficient quantities of water, especially in developing countries.

The number of flood and drought disasters rose by 230 per cent and 38 per cent respectively between the 1980s and 2000s, while the number of people exposed to floods rose by 114 per cent.

The cost of coastal adaptation to climate change is estimated to reach between US $26 billion and US $89 billion by the 2040s, depending on the magnitude of sea-level rise

The recent data that came out showing there haw been NO increase in global temperatures for something like 17 years now... and that the Al-Gore-Oh-My-God-we-are-all-going-to-die ozone hole, which has now almost completely healed itself, the Artic ice sheet is back to a normal level, etc., changes most of those dire predictions of doom.
