New speed bumps by Hilo airport
#1
They have been placed on the Puna side of the large circular drive opposite the main building. Not speed humps, used to reduce traffic to 15-25 mph, but speed bumps, designed to slow drivers to 5-10 mph. (mostly used in parking lots)

Comparison of road out to Keaukaha/Richardsons (Kalanianaole Avenue), which has no such safety measures.

K Ave: 2 lanes, traffic in opposite direction. Airport, 2 lanes same direction. Much safer.

K Ave: motorists contend with: Bicycles, joggers, people pulling in and out of driveways, people parking on the side of the road, walkers, dogs sometimes wandering around, people crossing the street to get to the ocean, walls and other obstructions along the side of the road.

Airport road: None of the above. Straight road, wide shoulders with no obstructions. Clear line of sight.

Any reason to put speed bumps here instead of speed humps? Any reason that 25 mph is not a safe speed for this stretch, about 1/4 mile??

Perhaps state DOT and the county officials who targeted the Farmers Market are in some sort of competition for the most impressive new safety measure.

Wait until someone sees the new speed bump and slams on their brakes - and gets rear-ended...

This was a completely stupid and unnecessary thing to do.

The advantages of allowing yourself plenty of time to get to the airport;

1. No need to rush

2. No need to slam on brakes for speed bumps

3. No need to follow so closely that you rear end someone

4. No need to blame county for avoidable problems

5. Extra time to ask TSA or Airport Security about newest safety measures.

State resents their obligation to provide services for neighbor islands. What better way to show it? Consider the incorrect signage which claims these are "speed humps" (when they clearly aren't).

When the State installs speed bumps/humps on the runways, we'll know we're really SOL, persona non grata.

Have you every drove the 15 mile per hour posted speed limit and see how many cars zoom by you? I dont think their need be speed bumps put a cop out their and write some tickets it would not take long for people to slow when the word got out.
