Prayer
#1
Ive had this thought when hurricane was coming and now again, several times on reading/ listening to current situation. At the outset, may I say that I am not religious and do not adhere to any organized belief system.

Prayer has been studied in medicine, and has been shown to effect healing, but you can always argue that it was pure coincidence. .. But in one study two groups of sick people, one prayed for, the other not, and the prayed for group had a statistically significant recovery... Sorry I don't have the exact reference, I would have to look it up...of course one study doesn't prove anything but maybe if more studies were conducted, prayer would be a proven treatment by now!!! However, how many people are willing to open themselves up to ridicule hence research has not been done. Or maybe the studies have been done and the effectiveness of prayer has been suppressed. Or alternatively, prayer is a load of hocus-pocus and has no effect on anything!

So, would praying that the lava flow stops or heads in a direction that does not have detrimental effects on our lives work?? Perhaps we should at least try it.... Whatever prayer means to you, set aside 5 minutes twice a day and set the intention of the lava flow stopping.

What is there to lose?[?]

I had the same thought yesterday and posted a prayer request on OurPrayer.org for the safety and healing of our community.

I have also requested prayers from family and friends on the mainland.

This ABCNews article gives a quick overview of some of the studies on prayer that have been done:

I think this is an excellent idea...for those who do not believe, they do not have to participate, and I would hope the same group of individuals find no offense to this suggestion and just pass on making any comments. Hopefully the title would sway them to stay away from something they do not believe will help. My own personal belief (and please no attacks folks) is that prayer does help.

Prayers for Puna!

The largest study I've heard of--maybe 6-7 years ago--said that people undergoing surgery who were prayed for had the same survival rate, but more complications. I suspect it's a statistical anomaly, but I ask people NOT to pray for me when I have surgery. One friend just insists; maybe she's why I have so many complications.

I don't think there have been many studies on the effects of prayer on lava flows, so this might be a good time to test it out.

If you want to pray, go ahead.
Please leave science out of it.

This is nature at work. We can not control it. Natural disaster, whatever you want to call it. The fact is, the lava is coming down the mountain, and looking for a place to flow into the ocean.
Whether Pele decides to stop.. Great! But if she keeps going, let it flow naturally.
We blow, throw bombs, and then we send the problem to some one else?
I do not think it is fair.
We all knew all along, what kind of lava path we lived on all along.
