Hi all...
Moving to the area next month.
Hitting middle age, have questioned a lot of things...but adding the diagnosis of cancer, have decided to totally revamp multiple things, including total lifestyle change for the better.
No place is without stress, but we are hopeful the move will be advantageous for quality of life...whether that be 30 months or 30 years, or somewhere in between. As I have told family, I'm not going to Hawaii to die, I'm going to Hawaii to LIVE.
Husband has taken "early retirement" (aka: left job of 26 years) to be able to make this dream come to reality and take care of me.
We will be dead a$$ broke, but hopefully living a better quality of life.
I do appreciate answering of questions posted, the information is helpful. Also have enjoyed reading responses. Some have been quite entertaining!

My heart goes out to you as I too am currently caring for someone close to me with cancer. You say you are moving here to enhance quality of life. I hope you find that to be true BUT coming here completely broke and during a time when there is so much uncertainty concerning the current volcanic eruption which is threatening the way of life for most of lower Puna. Your husband is quitting his job and yet you're dead broke. When I think about your situation it gives me the heebeegeebees (sp?)
Anyway I wish you the best and lots of good fortune in whatever you do.

Thanks Andrew...not totally broke, but starting anew, and well, it will take a lot of money to get set up. By no means will we be living it up, but we will have a secure home, and source of income to afford food, gas, clothes, etc. Perhaps more sarcasm on my part. I think most folks, when you say you're moving to Hawaii, think of those reality shows & having a 500,000K budget for a home...which is not the case for us. We are looking at a new adventure, new chapter, to enjoy life...we are not promised tomorrow, so we will do our best to enjoy the moment...volcano and all (yes, been keeping up with the readings). Best wishes to you and yours...yep, cancer sucks.

Welcome and best wishes. Cancer is no stranger to this forum. My wife was diagnosed in 2006, just as we were starting to build our house. I used to kid her that I could have worked faster if she hadn't taken the summer off hehe. Eight years later and all is well. There are good radiation and chemo available in Hilo.
Life can be really good here.

Thank you David. We are optimistic about our move there, and enjoying life. Right now getting down to the wire...excited, but also tiring! Thank you for sharing information...so glad to hear things are well! A sense of humor can go a long ways and be healing in itself!

I am a Puna resident; began my life in Hawaii at age 4, grew up on Kauai and Oahu. I have been reading this forum for several years, but the current Lava flow had me wanting to connect with others online. I am a single grandma,I keep busy with work in Hilo as a counselor/therapist. I have lived in Puna for past 21 years. I hope to contribute in a positive spirit of Aloha, and will probably ignore the posts that tend to be disrespectful and negative. Hello everyone, my name is John and with my wife Nancy we count 28 years in Hawaii. Althought we lived mostly in a small "sugar" village in the Hamakua, we have been in Puna for the last 8. Raised our kids here, in those days when a white boy and girl would come home everyday from school with bruises from punches, and just very few local kids would be allowed by their families to come to our birthday parties. Nancy and I farm our land and like to think that we independent of the grid; we threat lightly on this earth. We grow food and orchids in our lovely place. Nature itself is the only thing that still keep us here, but we are getting old and have too many booboos and sometimes the racist rants start to get under our skin, so we have decided to throw the towel in and retire in lovely Norfolk in the UK. It is going to be hard leaving behind the land, and the peace we have here, but having a decent hospital and medical care available to us has become an important necessity. Before we both get old and craggy we want to live in a cosmopolitan society and have access to a wide variety of options like municipal running water, a decent public transport and a pro active community where we are not called "foreigners" when we park in the "wrong" place. Unfortunately, our kids have no desire to come back to Hawaii given their the bad treatment they endured for years. One is a scientist living in the Ecuadorian Amazonia, and the other lives in Paris working as a graphic designer. We hoped that they would want to preserve the land that we worked so hard for all this years, but they could not care less to even visit this place. Several folk have made offers to buy our place but we keep making excuses to elongate our time here. No regrets, bittesweat memories, and whole lot of hard work ,our dear coqui frogs singing the night, our wonderful neigbors in Puna... all die hard haoles with dreams....which we dearly hope they become true to them.

Welcome to reverse racism. Now you know how it feels for non whites all over the world. You've experienced a rare lesson which will now give you insight that most won't experience outside of a white world. I have lived all over the world and seen racism in all colors and have been at the brunt of some of it depending what country I lived in. It cultivated tolerance, flexibility, strength and made me a well rounded person. Good luck and happy life to you and your family no matter where you are living.
