new service for PO box holders, get UPS and FedEx
#1
I recently found out that PO Box holders get the following services for free:

* Virtual street address to use to circumvent that "we don't ship to PO Boxes" crap that so many merchants stick to. And better yet, you can have other carriers ship to that address such as FedEx, UPS, DHL, and others and the post office will either put it in a parcel locker (if that post office has them, I know Pahoa and Keaau don't) or you can get them at the counter after standing in line.

* Text or Email when you get mail so you don't have to check an empty box.

* Signature on File service so you don't have to stand in line to get something you would normally have to sign for (assuming it fits in your box).

Here is the link of the paperwork to sign up for the virtual street address: https://ribbs.usps.gov/mtcsa/documents/t...eement.pdf

I don't know about the forms for the other services, when I signed up in Hilo they had a different form to sign up for all three services, plus I had to sign two signature cards.

As this is a newer service, YMMV at different post offices.

Keaau does have a limited number of parcel lockers, they're in the back of the side hallway where the indoor PO boxes are located.

I wish there were a service that would allow the post office to deliver to my house, like FedEx and UPS...

It's called "The Mainland."

When I lived in a rural area back in the '80's the mail carrier drove almost 1/2 mile between mailboxes. In wind & sleet & five months of snow.

I guess after two years of getting packages there I've never won that lottery. Always the line....

those services are NOT FREE. they cost a couple of hundred dollars per year. the notice advertising these services failed to mention that.

When I signed up, they told me it was free, and they collected no money from me.

I checked the USPS web site for a rate or fee structure and there isn't one. I did come across some third party sites and they all mentioned that the service was free. Maybe the Kurtistown PO employees don't want the extra work? Try signing up... I bet they don't find a button in their point-of-sale system to charge for this.

A friend gave me a great tip when I moved to the island and it has worked 99% of the time.

When ordering online from a place that doesn't ship to PO Boxes I provide BOTH my mailing and physical address.

Amazon will ship to you that way and the item may come to your door (Fedex, UPS) or to your POB depending on the carrier they choose. Other vendors follow suit.

The only time I have ever run into a problem was when the website for a vendor auto-corrects your address to conform to what the postal service recognizes as a correct address. In that instance, having the physical address on a second line throws things off. If you call them or make a note regarding delivery this solves the problem.
