OHA Support for Puna
#11
knieft, I hear you. Good points. Mahalo. OHA's mission? Well, that's debatable, and their website may provide better information (trying to ask for kokua and setting aside my personal opinion, Sir/Ma'am).

What was the "more drastic" forms of the aforementioned idea, please? Just curious.

"take back the land from the haoles"

but that's pretty much hijacking the thread

You can call me, Kirt--rhymes with dirt. Cheers.

Aloha, Kirt. Well, that's been the argument for the past hundred+ years! However, as we progress, OHA, and other Federal/State agencies MUST provide Puna with enough funding to preserve and protect our aina. That's what Obama's declaration stated, so I am of the mind to work with the hand we are dealt. For now.

Cheers! Oh, and you can call me "Princess in Waiting"...(JK, JK, JK!) [Big Grin]

A massive community garden that provides free/reduced produce or garden plots to families in need. Like others have said, the numbers of people who receive SNAP is huge around here, and it would be nice if they (and everybody else) had access to healthy, affordable produce which may even be harder to get once the lava crosses.

Mahalo Opihikao for the wonderful thread. Plenty happening this year with the storms and lava flows. It has been a pretty good one two punch so far delivered to the Puna community, and the flow has maybe just started. The past few weeks really have been encouraging to see the community come together, albeit more can be done.

Some good things I have noticed making positive differences of late are:
1) Pahoa's cross country team was given Shoes to run in and now they are all running their PR'S. They look sharp, more as a team wearing shirts that say smile every mile. A shoe company from kona is coming out this 7th or 8th to pass and give shoes to these boys and girls. Maybe other keiki in the area affected by the flow could use good footwear, hats, breathing masks, and a few outfits could help in many ways physically, mentally, and emotionally.
2) being prepared means different things to different people sometimes depending on their economic situation. So things like gas, water and propane are nice to have plenty of when the lights do go out or times get even harder. Yet for some the extra gas cans, legal propane tanks, and water jugs can be difficult for fixed income folks to go buy.
3) Batteries and working flashlights, candles, and home schooling books or projects.
4) most out here live on catchment and may need to syfen water from their tanks in the future or boil water so 5 gallon buckets, hoses, and cooking pots could help some.
5) For something I noticed during the prolonged power outage after storm Iselle was how difficult laundry became so any ideas would help in that department would be nice.
6)help with transportation to and from centers helping?. Or a few more home deliveries.
I'm sure help can come in many ways, shapes, and sizes. The important things are that the ones needing help are getting it if its available. I don't want to list them all and sound helpless to some so I will spare you. Thank you Ophikao.

Absolutely, shave ice. Please know the start of this idea is happening in Pohoiki. Any help we can give these kids who are working their tails to the bone, would be appreciated (it's been a few years in the making, and has finally materialized through these young people):

gypsy69, mahalo to you. Enjoy your posts. The list you gave has great merit, and we can add to this as we go along. Monday afternoon, a "first draft" of sorts will be provided to OHA. I hope we can get other people to participate, and again, long term, let's put our collective thinking caps on for a better Puna, once Tutu Pele is done.

Mahalo again, to all.

PiW,

"take back the land from the haloes" with guys in pickups and guns was the implied more drastic...

Cheers,
Kirt

btw...JK and Princess in Waiting went straight over my head, sorry to say. I thought maybe you were the GateKeeper or maybe, just maybe, the KeyMaster. We'll see what Gozer shows up as, and I doubt it will be the Pillsbury DoughBoy...

"Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!" Wink

gypsy69,

"5) For something I noticed during the prolonged power outage after storm Iselle was how difficult laundry became so any ideas would help in that department would be nice."

Clothes line outdoor:

Indoor:

In tub washing machine:

squeegie:

Pretty high quality and altogether less $$ than a washer/dryer I'd venture. Especially minus the electricity/propane. Maybe OHA can buy these for everyone...?

LMAO! (Sorry, OT again) Apologies, Sir, being you said, "Cheers", I thought you'd be an Englishman, like our Mr. Tom (who I adore)! It's a step up from "Lady in Waiting", if you will.

Who the heck is "Gozer"? [:0] And, no human sacrifice, but dogs and cats can live together. Just sayin'.

"Gate keeper", hmmmm...well, yes, I am. Of our own ohana kuleana (kuleana = responsibility). "Key master"? Oh no, a'ole! Kupuna hold that key, those here and those who are not.

"Squeaky wheel gets the grease" as the old adage states. I'm just a freaking squeaky wheel for our community, Sir. [Smile]

Cheers.

Aloha to you. JMO.

LiW, Aloha to you as well. Ghostbusters, the movie 1984, is the reference, but I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing.

As for Gozer:

"Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Over and out on the OT for me, but you can go ahead! I'm already leaving out relevant winkies in this thread and all my data points to something big on the horizon. But I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it! LET'S DO IT!

Cheers,
Kirt
