Tiffany posted on her FB page that those who are moving out of Puna because of the lava had better update their voter registration or they might get accused of voter fraud. While this is good advice it is not the same as lying about your residence to vote in another district.

Deflection. Your voter registration will be fine. It is based on where you lived this past year, not next year.
Not surprised at Tiffany though.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Uh, no. "Forced from your primary residence by natural disaster" is quite different than "declared residence address as convenient for voting/election/tax break".
Moving permanently "because of the lava" is no different than any other permanent move.
On the other hand ... County is bending other rules for the "lava emergency", so maybe these rules are flexible too, just making it up as we go along...
Did you know that Hawai'i case law on voter residency goes back to the Hawaiian Kingdom? I don't know exactly what all was voted on, but it looks like commoners could vote for ali'i, and the question of residency went to the courts.
The courts ruled that "residence" did not need to be a house or permanent structure at all: it could be a grass shack, a hut, etc.. What mattered was "fixing" your grass shack to one address, one piece of land.
Likewise, if you lived on a steamliner and floated around, that would not suffice as an address, because it might be the same boat but it had no fixed position.

I find Tiffany's post asinine and repugnant. there are a lot of people under a lot of pressure here; she may be one of them, but the rest are not being investigated for voter fraud. Not that we know of anyway! Her alleged crimes have nothing to do with this disaster, except that for her, it will soon be everything hitting the fan at once.

Has this been successfully swept under the rug?
It seems to have disappeared.
Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to Hawaii's elections.

Maybe the rabid Tiff-haters will realize that this is not an important issue, and move on. Though I doubt it. Haters gonna hate - that's what they do. Meanwhile, there are real issues out there in the real world. If you want your life to be meaningful, someday focus on those instead, eh?

mendo - suppose she does get elected and then the prosecutor decides to file charges. What sort of Puna Circus will come out of that? Is that what you want for Puna?
Now is certainly not the time to elect her. Maybe, IF she doesn't get charged, she could run again in 2 years. Now though, is the time for her to step aside and get this cleared, IF she can.
