Mahalo for this. Now is the time for us to pay attention. Weed out the "politicians" and find a "statesman".

JMO.

P.S. Y'all are registered to vote, right? Elections better get our votes calculated properly. This time. Please.

Governor Candidates Assure Hilo Voters on Disaster Preps, Recovery

Barely 20 miles away from Hilo, Madame Pele is creeping toward Pahoa in Hawaii County’s Puna District. The latest prediction is that the lava flow will reach Highway 130 within two weeks, cutting off the vast region’s main road.

How, then, would David Ige, Duke Aiona and Mufi Hannemann address the crisis if they were governor?

All three candidates assured an audience in Hilo’s Sangha Hall that, while counties take the lead for disaster preparation and recovery, the state plays a critical role. All three recently visited the Puna area and spoke with residents and community leaders.

I am curious what peoples opinions are as to how David Ige managed to unseat Neil Abercrombie.
Was it a reactionary backlash or something else?

I suspect Abercrombie lost because he managed to tick off enough subsets of the voter base to enable Ige to cobble together a majority. Some folks voted against Abercrombie because of the way he handled the teachers, others didn't like that he "disrespected Senator Inouye" by not appointing Hanabusa to the Senate, a bunch weren't happy about the push for gay marriage, some felt threatened by his proposal to tax pensions, etc.

I also think some Republicans switched parties and voted Democratic because they think Ige will be an easier candidate for Aiona to beat.

I don't think it was any one specific issue, or that Abercrombie was a particularly bad governor. And I don't think Ige won because there was a groundswell of support for his candidacy - he was just a Democratic candidate who wasn't Abercrombie.

The bottom line is that this election will be very interesting because I don't see much strong support for any of the candidates. And it's hard to say which candidate will benefit most from Mufi's candidacy - I could make a strong case for both opinions. I think a candidate named "None of the above" would win in a landslide

David Corrigan posted a 12 part video series of the event on the Big Island Video News website. Topics include Agriculture, Business, Cesspools, Disasters, Education, etc. but they crammed all the videos on one webpage and it loads slow on my DSL. Could be a scripting issue as well but if you have fast internet you can view the segments here:
http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2014/1...ates-hilo/

The videos are also mirrored on their YouTube site which seems to load quite a bit faster for me. You can also access them starting here:

As to why Ige won over the World's Largest Garden Gnome: It isn't necessarily that people were pro- Ige as much as anti-Ambercrombie. He burned a lot of bridges and in particular with the teachers of Hawaii when he bargained in bad faith and unilaterally froze their wages.

From the beginning he was only supposed to be a one-term candidate and I would guess that Schatz was supposed to take over the Governorship next but then opportunity arose with Inouye's death and now Schatz holds one of the Federal Senatorial seats.

A lot of the "Silent Majority" switched sides to get rid of Neal. Everything else is a bonus!!
