If you were an employer - which D5 candidate ?
#1
Like the title says.

I think a lot of people have been looking at the remaining 2 district 5 council candidates in the wrong manner. We, as voters, ARE the employer.

Instead of just voting for a candidate, consider it as if you were the employer, looking to hire that candidate. Which one would you hire? Which one would you avoid? What are the qualities you like, dislike?

Keep it clean.

Paleka vs Edwards Hunt

http://www.lwv-hawaii.com/candidates-2014.htm

Here are their own stories:

My name is Tiffany Edwards Hunt. I am a journalist by trade, a mother of two (Coco and JJ), and wife to a surfboard builder and retailer (Jeff). I have a deep interest in politics, having covered Hawaii County government for one of our island dailies and for the newspaper I founded, Big Island Chronicle. My paternal grandfather (Bryan Edwards) was a city councilman and my father (Dave Edwards) was also a city councilman and state representative.

I have studied Hawaii County government for more than a decade as a newspaper reporter. I am able to write and communicate effectively, as a result of my trade. I am also familiar with the Hawaii County Charter and the Hawaii County Code, and I know how to write legislation as a result of a stint working as a legislative aide to a council member in the 2006-2008 term.

/////////////

Aloha, my name is Daniel Kapo'o Paleka Jr., a small business owner and also an employee of the University of Hawaii (Hawaii Community College). I was very fortunate to be born and raised in Hawaii, attended Kamehameha Schools and graduated from the fine University I work for. My experience working and living abroad for more than 5 years in Europe was also a valuable education. I have traveled to many places in this wonderful world of ours. I met my lovely wife Susi while working in Germany. She is now a licensed medical social worker and also works with children. I entered State service upon return to Hawaii in 1991 as an adult corrections officer for 13 years and a union business agent for 5 years. I actually began working at the age of 14. Politics and hard work is in my blood. My grandfather and great grandfather were licensed union member plumbers and both also served as Mayors of Pasadena, California. My grandfather taught me the difference between talking about government projects and actually knowing how to build them and get them on the ground. The Benedict Heliport in Pasadena is named after my grandfather and great-grandfather. I want to continue their legacy here in what has always remained my home, Hawaii. Mahalo Ke Akua.

If I were the "employer" in this case I would be looking for a solid ability to form and maintain strategic alliances for the benefit of all of Puna.

So someone who can work well with the district 4 councilor, as well as Ka'u and South Kona, to get legislation passed that can support meeting the needs of the residents of these districts that lack jobs, access to higher education, and access to medical care, would be a priority for me. I hope that is what happens, this is a really important time of transition for all of Puna, and our councilors really need to work together.

Edwards Hunt has a dislike for Greggor Ilagan that approaches a vendetta, having referred to him on her blog as "dude-boy" on one occasion and having driven to his office in a rage when he didn't attend a meeting in Pahoa. If you're looking for someone who "plays well with others," don't look for her.

One has experience and credentials. The other one doesn't. One is local and the other isn't. It's about time for more of the government to have kamaaina representation without so many bizarre mainland transplant idealogues.

As an former employer myself, I have always tried to avoid hiring anyone who would be considered "high maintenance" or appeared to have issues with getting along with others, or being a team player. I didn't want individuals that thought so highly of themselves and their opinions that they might be unable to compromise effectively when working complex issues with a group.

If I was the employer, I would hire someone like Danny, whose extensive resume can be proven and verified. Dissimilar to Tiffany, whose resume is full of holes and has proven herself to be an unethical person who likes to play games with her voter registration and voting procedure and mettle's in other people district politics so as to fulfill her ambition.

Would I hire someone who would 'Roast' the other candidates and not herself?

Would I hire someone who would, petition the County, to prohibit another [the Gallon Family] from doing business next to her husband's store, for fear that they may be competition?

Would I hire someone who has been ruthless in her operations and keeps an "enemies list" and forms vendettas against people who have a difference of opinion? As a councilperson, you just can't do that. You have to accept and respect people's opinions but that is not her demeanor.

Would I hire someone who has demonstrated to be a foul mouth, foul writing, mean spirited individual, who uses expletive's in print and in speech, to get her bias opinion across or that of her cronies?

If all goes the way it should, the question becomes, how can Tiffany run a district while defending herself from a class c felony?

I am so glad there is a Danny Paleka in this race!

Do the righteous thing , ELECT A PALEKA 2014!!!![Wink]

That's the nail on the head, leilanidude. [Smile]
What you say is essentially what I said with my first post on TEH. Doesn't play well with others.

We might recall that she was not able to work in the office when an aid for Emily Naeole. She was given a special dispensation to work from home, and even with that she still quit after one year, yet she puts it on her political resume as if her stint there was a success, when actually it was one of her failures.

I believe that the working from home was in part because of her young daughter, because she refused to do child care. I am a supporter of breast feeding and of taking care of our small children first, but as a mother who had to work, I feel that this is something we all need to balance if we choose to work at that time. The rest of us make it work by figuring it out and not asking for major special allowances.

I would call it very high maintenance to become the first and last person in the job to be allowed to telecommute -- and then she complained that she had to document her time (read that on her blog).

I had not seen Paleka's statement and I like it. I read heart, humilty, and a sense of realism. I also like that he is from here originally. Even though I am a transplant and I appreciate that we all come here hoping to make this our home and put down roots, I am all for "hiring" someone with a lifelong perspective on Hawai'i. I also like that he spent time abroad and picked up a sense of other cultures.

I think the Carpenter's Union erred by not waiting to endorse until everyone had pulled papers, as they endorsed before he filed. It looks as though he has very solid union background. Paleka seems to be running his campaign on quite a low budget, and has to compete against a Super-PAC backed opponent. That must be tough for him. He's kind of like the job candidate who didn't have money for a fancy resume or a great suit and shoes. He's just here in his regular clothes saying he will work hard and maintain a realistic perspective.

I like this line:
quote:
My grandfather taught me the difference between talking about government projects and actually knowing how to build them and get them on the ground.
Puna could use someone who gets that.

If I were seeking an employee, in this case a person to represent me, who would I hire? In all cases I would hire an Eagle Scout. Why? Because once an Eagle, always an Eagle and they have learned to live by the Scout Laws and always do. So what is so good about living the Scout Laws other than they guide you to be responsible, dedicated, hard working and have integrity. I have personally raised 3 Eagle Scouts and worked in the Scouting experience for over 20 years and have seen many Eagle scout go on to be outstanding citizens.

Some of the laws that an Eagle Scout will follow and make him (or her) a better and reliable employee are:

TRUSTWORTHY – Tells the truth, keeps his promises, honesty is there code of conduct, People can depend on them

LOYAL – True to their family, leaders, friends and nation

HELPFUL – They are concerned about other people, do things willingly for others without rewards

FRIENDLY - They are a friend to all. They seek to understand others, respects those with ideas and customs other than their own

COURTEOUS – They are polite to everyone, have good manners so to get along with others

KIND – They treat others as they want to be treated themselves

OBEDIENT – They obey the laws of their community and Nation. If they feel these rules and laws are unfair, they try to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them.

CHEERFUL – They look for the bright side of things, cheerfully does the tasks at hand, trys to make others happy

THRIFTY - They help others, protect and conserve our natural resources, carefully uses time and property

BRAVE – They have the courage to stand for what they think is right even if others laugh at or threaten them

CLEAN – They keep their body and mind fit and clean, go around with those who believe in living by these same ideals

REVERANT - they respect the beliefs of others

A person with all of these characteristics, traits, and beliefs will make an excellent employee, and the perfect representative for all the constituents in our District. The question in this case is which candidate lives by the Scout laws and will make the best representative. In fallowing all the campaign and the 2 candidates, it is obvious that Ms. Edwards-Hunt does not come close to having the characteristics of an Eagle Scout and therefore would not make a good representative per the Scout laws. While, on the other hand, following Mr Paleka’s campaign, it would appear he does practice the Scout laws and therefore would make a very good representative for us at the council level.
