Hawaii Will Redraw Tsunami Warning Maps
#1
The tsunami of 1946 was thought to be the largest to have ever hit the islands. However evidence has been found of another much larger wave 500 years ago, three times larger:

With computer simulations, Butler and his colleagues ... learned the geometry of the East Aleutian area would funnel water right at Kauai and the Big Island, with enough energy to climb 30 feet once it hit shore.

Hawaii officials are busy redrawing their tsunami warning maps, enlarging the danger zone further inland and higher. Kauai was clobbered by a 30-foot wall of water about 500 years ago. That is three times the size of what used to be considered the biggest wave to hit the islands, a 1946 tsunami.

Interesting. Had a conversation a few years ago with an older local who was relating his experiences when he came back from Viet Nam and decided to walk or swim his way around the entire island to get his head straight again. He said that almost all of the really interesting things he found from old Hawaiian culture were about 30 feet above sea level, put there he thought by storms. To prove his point, he took me on a short walk into the bush and showed me an ancient anchoring stone about thirty feet above the water. He also stated that he didn't want the archeologists to know about it as they would just steal it from it's proper resting place. Interesting fellow.

Vertical Tsunami Shelters -
I thought the hotels in Honolulu were built to withstand a tsunami, but maybe it's just a tidal surge. Does anyone know? According to this article, the first vertical tsumani shelter in the country is being built in Washington state.

The first vertical tsunami evacuation structure in the country, capable of holding the approximately 1,000 people living within a 20-minute walking distance of the structure.
