I have a bad feeling that we are about to lose internet access. The same thing that happened with Hughes Net several years ago seems to be happening with Exede now. Download speeds are down to 1/2 mps which means no more TV viewing. Exede sent out an email recently which essentially said that you can cancel your service if you don't like it. We're paying $125 per month for this service. Spectrum installed cable on our road 2 years ago but tell me that they aren't ready to connect anyone on our road in Hawaiian Acres. I have a feeling that Exede is about to go belly up like Hughes did.
Anybody out there have any inside info?

Hawaiian Acres has Telcom fiber on all the unpaved roads, faster/cheaper than Exede, no usage caps....

After calling Spectrum repeatedly they say they haven't run the Telcom cable yet. I tell them I can see the new cable out my window. That doesn't impress them. They won't hook us up.

Contact the county. Spectrum has to hook you up if you have the required density (25 houses per mile, I think).

Wow, that's a lot for internet access. We do have Spectrum, and it runs us about $55 a month, and we got an Amazon Fire Stick to run our tv. Used to be close to $200 a month for web, cable tv with HBO, and land line phone. I found and and got rid of the cable and phone, and we just use our cell phones now. So, we are saving about $145 a month, and do not have HBO.

Spectrum not being aware of their own installations is a known problem. The workaround is: flag down the next Spectrum truck you see and explain your problem to the installer, let them call it in.
Alternately, call Telcom. Especially if you already have landline service. Their cheapest (fiber) tier is more bandwidth than you can use.

You called the wrong company. Phone Hawaiian Telcom, instead as they are the ones who ran the fiber past your house.

Indeed Call Hawaiian Tel. They are the ones running fiber optics all over the place and the service is Top notch. Drop the exceed like a hot potato too much for what they are giving even if it isnt much. I would almost bet you can get faster service cheaper via cellular service at this point.

The big Telcom fiber expansion was only for areas with no other broadband option. This means (as suggested above) that fiber is generally available on all the unpaved roads in Hawaiian Acres, because Spectrum doesn't bother to deploy cable unless there's a paved road.
Possible exception for those within range of the RDSLAM at 1/C because DSL is also "broadband". If they're using the 10Mbit definition, this only affects subscribers within about 7Kft where G.lite can reliably achieve 11Mbit. Which still beats satellite.

Subject to random delays, rain fade, failure during power outages, etc. But at least it's more expensive.
(Telcom fiber is passive, their end is battery-powered, the ONT at your end consumes only a few watts, even the cheapest UPS will last hours.)
