Something interesting at Safeway gas pumps
#1
Saw someone washing his windows while pumping gas (something I remember doing in the old days). So I wonder was the gas actually flowing while the windows were being washed (because you have to hold the handle to keep the flow going, otherwise it stops.). Well, turns out the gas was flowing because I heard a clunk and the handle jumped.
Figuered out he had something jammed into the handle to lock it on so he wouldn’t have to stand there and hold it. That something was his tethered gas cap. Handle clicks off, he flips the cap out and replaces it and the nozzle and he’s off.
Slicker than snot and only took a few seconds.
Makes me wonder why I hadn’t thougt of it!

I've seen that trick being applied in videos - that didn't end so well... the fumes from the tank ignited and the car owner couldn't get close enough to the handle to stop the flow of gasoline - for whatever reason, the automatic shut off didn't work properly... Whole place went up...

8Fingers, you bring up something I've been wondering about for quite awhile. Why do they even have that little lever to keep the gas flow going? Works fine everywhere else in the country I've ever been. Did they just make them inoperable in Hawaii?

My wallet fits perfectly in the handle. Clicks off when full and zero overflow.

That's why I have a "Smart" car. I can hold the pump and wash all the windows at the same time.

Yes, I also wonder why they disabled the auto fill on gas pumps in Hawaii. Is it a law?

"Under the fire code, the mechanisms are required to be removed so that gasoline dispensing nozzles cannot be left open, explained William Pierpont, manager of the Measurement Standards Branch and acting administrator of the Quality Assurance Division.

Although the Measurement Standards Branch does monitor gas pumps, enforcement of the fire code comes at the county level."

The Hawaii government doesn't trust its own citizens. Lots of examples. I'm surprised we don't have mandatory full-service pumps like New Jersey.

If Harry could figure out a way to make gas attendants County employees we would. But then imagine buying gas. It would take 20 minutes every time you filled up.
