Just had the first rain/ sprinkle in 4 days

So I was at home and it started to sprinkle and then a bit more. The rain had a heavy chemical smell to it that was very pervasive and was something you would notice because it was very strong.
I have smelled obnoxious rain many times here in Hawaii, but this was the worst
Anyone else? I should add here that the smell went away as soon as the rain did.

It did not smell like sulfur. I have not smelled anything like it before.

got me curious enough to do a google search. top contenders seem to be septic issues or chem trails.

It would seem to be the wrong time of year, but albizias give off a nasty garlicky-gasoline smell in the rain, especially strong if they're blooming. Maybe with all the keiki albizias since the hurricane?

I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

I'm kind of surprised anybody here can smell anything anymore. The air's been bad for so long now, my sinuses, eyes, lungs are barely functioning. My stomach isn't queezy today, so that's an improvement. I did get a good whiff of rat pee yesterday when I checked the trap. (yuck) At least the water tanks are full again, so we can try the cold shower method and do some wash. Trying to keep on counting my blessings. The alternative is too depressing.

After I had slept on it it the closet recognizable smell would be somewhat akin to a bathroom de- odorizer

alright Bob, i continue to be curious here.

this is what i am thinking....

the smell of rain. i knew it had a name but had to look it up. Petrichor (from plants). the chemicals Geosmin (from earth) and Ozone also pitch in. smell is strongest when rain falls in previously dry conditions.

"Why Does Rain Smell Good?

Do you love the good smell of rain? If so, you're not alone.

In fact, some scientists believe that people inherited their affection for the scent of rain from ancestors who relied on rainy weather for their survival.

But what makes rain smell so nice? There are several scents associated with rainfall that people find pleasing.

One of these odors, called "petrichor," lingers when rain falls after a prolonged dry spell. Petrichor — the term was coined in 1964 by two Australian scientists studying the smells of wet weather — is derived from a pair of chemical reactions.

Some plants secrete oils during dry periods, and when it rains, these oils are released into the air. The second reaction that creates petrichor occurs when chemicals produced by soil-dwelling bacteria known as actinomycetes are released. These aromatic compounds combine to create the pleasant petrichor scent when rain hits the ground.

Another scent associated with rain is ozone. During a thunderstorm, lightning can split oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere, and they in turn can recombine into nitric oxide. This substance interacts with other chemicals in the atmosphere to form ozone, which has a sharp smell faintly reminiscent of chlorine.

When someone says they can smell rain coming, it may be that wind from an approaching storm has carried ozone down from the clouds and into the person's nostrils.
