The cesspool theory would not make a whole lot of sense UNLESS there were a change in use that had just happened, as the cesspools have been a part of that system for a while...
I am not an expert, but having been involved in as many cleanups and ocean days as I have, I have a suspicion that the debris load from Iselle that was placed into the anchialine ponds may have had the impact on the reef health we are seeing today.
That was my concern the first day I saw those ponds after Iselle, and was the only reason I worked soo hard to try to get the county and as many volunteers as I could to assist...even coming to this community with volunteer requests. Unfortunately, this cleanup had fewer volunteers than any other I have coordinated, but with the volunteer we had (and an awesome tractor assist) we were able to remove 11.5 tons of debris from a couple of the ponds...
With the remaining debris load still in some of the ponds, if my hunch is correct, there will be a problem in the area until all of the organic debris dumped in these ponds is completely broken down.
