Since traffic on Hwy 130 will not improve anytime in the immediate future it would be great if DOT or the county had a mechanism or cameras we could access to provide real time updates. But as a recent HTH article pointed out our state and county does not have the resources, technical know how and most importantly the concern with Puna traffic issues. As a community we can assist each other with social media updates on real or near time traffic reports. Right now the best free app appears to be Waze download from Google play for android (Waze Social GPS Maps & Traffic) or iTunes for iPhone. You can share with other users traffic see other user reports and avg speeds and other useful information. This would work a lot better than searching FB HPP pages for current traffic reports. Plus you can share or screenshot your Waze report to your favorite FB page. Let's build a network to assist ourselves. I'm in Waze user BWMABRY. PC access at waze.com

Puna can probably get County to approve more commercial zoning before State improves "their" only road to Hilo.

Not that I recommend looking while in the car, but before you leave the house, you should be able to see on your smartphone on the Google Maps app. Google crowd-sources information from everyone with an Android phone that is driving, using GPS data. Put differently, it can tell if hundreds or thousands of people are driving north from Pahoa to Hilo along 130, and what their average speed is. The Maps app then color-codes the various roads to give an indication of the speed.

My husband said there was a bad 3 car wreck (ok, 2 trucks and a car) on his way home yesterday about 4ish. I believe he said it was around Kurtistown but I have not heard anything about it. He said one of the trucks looked pretty bad and an ambulance was headed to Hilo. Anybody know how the people involved are doing?

I know that's not 130 but still relevant to this thread, I think.

Pam it certainly is relevant, Puna mauka has it's share of traffic issues as well. Opened the Waze map today and after having posted in a couple of other sites I've noticed there was alot more users in Puna. Goggle maps is a quick go to but, does not post the reason why the traffic is slowed or at a halt. Whereas Waze allows you to post i.e. Road construction vs one lane open due to a traffic accident.

We went today from Pahoa to Kea'au at about 12:30 and was smooth sailing at 45 an then in construction area 35 and no problems what so ever, but did look like they were on lunch break and doing some major paving. They should be pau soon with all this and we will soon forget all the problems.
We spoke with Nan Inc top boss a few weeks ago at Jimmy's Radiator and repair and in about 90 days, weather permitting, they will be pau.
So just relax, slow down enjoy our ride and soon by tax season this will be a non issue.
