PGV meeting ends in arrest for RJ
#71
Burn the witch at the stake, they all clamored and cheered.
Gas the Jews the Nazi clamored and cheered.
Where do we stop?
What do we know?
It has always been the fear of the unknown that mobilizes the ignorant.

That quote could easily apply to many of RJ's activities over the last year. To the people who came to a community meeting to civilly be heard and hear others, not so much.

Can we skip the over the top holocaust references please? Invoking something like Auschwitz implies that the group is persecuting RJ which is simply not true. Try again without exagerating.

Agreed, lavalava. No matter what people think of PGV, it is not a Nazi concentration camp and any comparisons to that awful time in history are completely inappropriate.

Harry Kim has been vocal and involved regarding current issues with PGV and geothermal laws, especially over the last few years. A couple examples.

Aug 2014: On PGV's release event during Iselle

etc...

The rest of the world has embraced geothermal power as there are hundreds now operating, with hundreds more in development. Some of Germany's plants are located in the middle of urban areas!

http://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/7/7/4397/pdf
Germany's vast majority of geothermal plants tap low and intermediate heat sources used for district heating; hence they are located in urban areas for efficient heat distribution. Only 7 plants are used for generating electricity, the largest of which are 5.5MW, and all together have a combined capacity of 27MW, which is still less than PGV.

In Germany's urban areas, ordinances on emissions and noise help mitigate the impact.
"The drilling, testing and stimulation of wellbores also requires energy and causes noise. Since geothermal wells are often drilled in urban areas, efficient noise protection walls are mandatory."

In the UK, and elsewhere, special heavily soundproofed drilling rigs are available that generate only 45db of noise at 200m.

EDIT: links, clarification

I had no idea geothermal energy is being used in the UK. Given the link, I'm not convinced it is, and in any case it's not a good comparison to a small island with an active volcano.

Sorry - the link was for noting the special drilling rigs possible for reducing noise - see section How noisy will it be? I am trying to hunt down actual noise ordinace levels for Germany but ich spreche kein Deutsch.

Looks like geothermal is in the consideration phase for the UK?

Hey, if RJ wants to employ a bit of civil disobedience and get herself arrested to make a point that's her business. I wasn't there so I won't comment on the appropriateness of her actions. What I will say is that I admire her for having the courage to be herself. In this world where people hide behind layers of insulation: pseudonyms, proxy servers, phoney email accounts, snide and degrading invective, it's refreshing to see someone who takes their street theater seriously. And for all of you who cower behind your euphemistic expressions, we know what you're all about. I think RJ is calling you guys out -- on both sides of this issue; Take off your masks and face reality. Maybe then a bit of mutual trust will develop and Puna can move forward.
