With this june 27th lava flow disaster many places of business have had to decide on staying, leaving, and returning. Well one thing is for sure around these parts of late and that is the tourists are here in numbers more than before. The local restaurants must be making record monthly sales as employees are working longer hours. Area Vacation rentals, or bed and breakfasts, must be booked for the most part. How or what else could or should this county do to promote more tourism dollars to be spent here?
Would be a great opportunity for this county to gain in jobs, work, and paid taxes, Rather than EBT increases.

More commercial zoned real estate would be the easiest way.

Current land-use paradigm creates BANANA-style development; the only place "suitable" for C zoning is also downslope of the active lava.
That said, County should be encouraging development of services within the "designated commercial areas". It would also help if they eased up on some of the byzantine restrictions that make home-based businesses impractical. Maybe a nice campground, too.

I have heard from many old timers from here that awhile back the influential people of this island decided that the only major towns would be Hilo and Kona. And that is to prevent our island from turning into the mess created on O'ahu. More business and jobs, means more and more new people moving in.

I had hoped that the new (intended) park in Pahoa would include a couple acres for a professional campground. Back packer tourists from Europe, Japan and elsewhere would be a boon to Pahoa. A campground walking distance from stores and restaurants would be full.

I used to bodyboard the North Shore about 10-15 years ago and absolutely loved the waves and vibe. More recently, I no longer take the flight up there due to the place being totally ruined due to commercialism and economic development. KEEP COUNTRY COUNTRY.
