"The only form of energy I do not want to support is fossil fuel. Even liquidfied natural gas is better."
Are you under the impression that natural gas is not a fossil fuel? What does your boat run on, BTW?

This island could easily be the eco-paradise envy of the world. Geothermal could power light rail island-wide--there are so few roads anyway. Geothermal could be bubbling hydrogen 24/7, especially at night. The BI would be a great proof of concept experiment for HFC cars since the infrastructure needs would be contained on the island (assuming people balk at light-rail construction). Fantasy: Apple, Inc uses BI as proto-lab to roll out a new generation of vehicles (maybe even light rail!) See: http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/02/apple-car-2/
Stand-alone solar systems may become even more feasible with burgeoning battery tech (http://www.aquionenergy.com/energy-storage-technology for one example) or HFC alone without the need for solar panels and battery. Geothermal could provide the hydrogen easily.
I kinda hope they pick the Bryson's site above the steam vents mentioned along the way, though that seems like it would silly given the lava flow presently. Still, living a mile or so below the steam vents would give me the opportunity to say SIMBY (surely in my backyard) to an energy source as wonderful and environmentally friendly as geothermal. The irony being that we are 15 poles away from the grid and are completely stand alone anyway--like many around the Pohoiki geothermal.
An "anti-geothermal environmentalist" appears oxymoronic to my brain circuits. But to each his/her own...
Cheers,
Kirt
