Aloha Punawebbers,
There is a club right here in Pahoa that cleans 2 miles of the highway into Pahoa, tests keiki for seeing and hearing problems, and deploys generators faster than emergency responders--because we live here.
Puna Lions is a service organization looking for new members. We love members who participate in our activities, but welcome those who only pay dues. Read more about the club here:

We're doing a Food Drive tomorrow Sunday March 8th from 9am until 1pm in front of Longs Pahoa. This drive benefits a Pahoa charity called Hui Aloha O Puna Makai. Everything collected stays right here in Pahoa. Non-perishable food, laundry detergent, paper products are all welcome--anything you might use in your house.
We have fun and we're making a difference in the community! Please consider joining or supporting us! Mahalo

Mahalo, to all the Punawebbers who came out to support our Food Drive. In 4 hours we collected 120 lbs of food. That's enough food for about 400 meals or think of it as 400 Pahoa keikis who will not go to bed hungry. It was a little slow yesterday probably because of the rain. Our record collection is 733 lbs.
All the food collected stays here and is distributed by Hui Aloha O Puna Makai, a Pahoa charity headed by Luana Jones and based out of Lehua Cafe.
We'll be doing a Food Drive at Pahoa's Longs the 2nd Sunday of every month from 9 am until 1 pm. Next one will be Sunday April 12th.
We really appreciate your support!!

Sunday is our "Longs" day and we always buy something in the store to donate to your food drive. I have a question and a suggestion.
Question is, what type of foods are you most looking for to be donated? I've always been told "protein" but every food drive is different. This last time we gave peanut butter and jelly because 1) it's protein and 2) keikis. The suggestion, if you could post the food drive date/time with a useful subject like "Food drive x/x/xxxx at Longs" because sometimes we have stuff in our cupboards we would donate and not knowing about the food drive, we won't know to bring it to Longs that day. (It was random that I clicked on Puna Lions club and also unfortunate the randomness wasn't until after the food drive).
thanks for all that you do,

Mahalo for your support!
We collect non perishable food items and you are correct protein is very good! I shop the the sales at Safeway (fri) and Target, KTA, Amazon Warehouse etc. Peanut Butter and jelly are well received. I also buy all the discounted food items after the holidays that I can.
I try and buy good quality items, not so too much junk food but when you're hungry everything tastes good and we don't reject any type of food except for expired food.
I also check our cupboard for close but not expired food and usually find a few items that haven't expired but are getting too close to their expiration date.
Although I believe in the cause, I don't want to be too much of a pest so next month I'll post the date on the Puna Events page and your idea of putting the info in the header is a good one! But if you want to put it on your calendar, except for Dec. (we don't want to compete with the Salvation Army bell ringers)we will always be there at Pahoa Longs from 9 am until 1 pm the second Sunday of every month. If it's heavy rain with high winds there's a chance we could cancel as the overhang at Longs gives us little protection.
Thanks again!

A lot of us don't check events, you will not be a pest by posting monthly reminders here, it is important to feed our population, especially the kids.

Terracore, they don't accept expired foods. If you're looking for outdated food, try calling local food banks, I'll bet they do get some.

We check and don't accept expired food for our Food Drive. I do have a bag of expired canned goods in my garage I don't know what to do with?

Not trying to tell anyone what to do here, but fwiw, the expiration date on food is just a 'best guess' like using the word may. It may be expired by this date. It doesn't mean the food is bad by that date.

Canned food really doesn't have an expiration date as far as safety goes. If the can is good, the food is safe to eat. The taste may change over time though. I imagine after a certain amount of time the food would start tasting like the can.
We take "expired" food when we can get it, the chickens don't care.
