Where to get kit carports?
#1
I'm looking to upgrade my HPM electrical-conduit and tarp "carport" with another temporary solution that is a little more durable. I've seen those kit varieties with the metal roofs (they have one at the Pahoa HI5 place for example). Where do they come from? Anybody have one? Experiences? How much do they cost?

Also, if anybody can please derail this thread with comments about permits, the county, property taxes, satellite imagery, or general hysteria; I could use the entertainment.

thanks.

You're ruining paradise with your development man
No he won't, because county will never give him a permit
Well the lava will destroy all of Puna in the next few days
Lava could be diverted, it's been done before
Respect Tutu Pele or go back to where you came from!
Pele is wishful thinking
How nice of you to respect others' beliefs
I believe aliens want a spaceport not a carport
Why won't the county invest in projects like this in Puna?
They want you to drive to Hilo
On the highway with sometimes 2 or 3 lanes? That'll kill us all!
Just like GMO food
Still not as bad as that sneaky, dirty geothermal
Geothermal is perfect, blessing us and the keiki with lower rates
Development like that is ruining paradise man
...

(Should cover the usual ground - maybe someone will come up with a new and inventive way to derail the thread Wink

Why would you bother with a carport when your vehicle is destroyed by the unmaintained private roads. Even if you did build it, the County's expensive aerial mapping software would result in a property tax increase.

You will be driving to Hilo for the carport in any case.

Somehow it's just not as much fun when invited to derail the thread...

I got one of those 10x20 carports from home depot. the pipe kind with the tarp. the thing is already rusting in less than 6 months. I have another larger tent style carport 20x40 that is galvanized and shows no rust after 2 years. I got it second hand from a guy that had it shipped from Oahu from a tent/awning company, costs more but worth it in the long run.

Cheap kit from J Hara: tarp fails before the frame rusts out, replace tarp once or twice.

Current solution: wood frame + used roofing (Craigslist). More expensive than tarp-based carport, but worth the effort.

Look for the steel used on craigslist and get an experienced steel framer to recycle it into what you need. Roof panels you could luck out and find used or surplus or just buy new ones through the local sources.

The longest lasting ones I've seen are the Costco Carports. I bought one 6 years ago. Pretty rusty now but still up. Many tarps later.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
