I'm well acquainted with the slower pace of life here in the Islands and realize that you don't get home repairs and remodels done at "Mainland" speed, and I'm fine with that. But what's with folks who advertise their services (online or otherwise) and then don't even bother to return phone phone calls or emails?! Or, they promise to come out at a specific date/time and don't ever show up (nor call to reschedule). I've been a business owner for more years than I've worked for others, so maybe my standards are different than some, but sheeesh, if you say you're going to do something ... then, you do it! Pretty simple concept, no?!
On that note, if any of you have recommendations for well-established, reliable handyman/remodel/appliance businesses, I'm all ears!

To be fair, I had the same issue on the mainland.

My experience suggests that calls will be returned if they need the work and feel like doing it, otherwise it's not important enough to bother.

Some enter the service industry because they like to, well, serve. Service provides more immediate feedback than production or sales.
The problem is good provider of service is soon in high demand if the market is strong. They are booked full and each potential new customer is someone they must say no. If they fail to say no, they take on more than they can handle and everyone is now upset. So often times to save from having to say no, it is easier to not answer.
At the height of the mortgage boom, I refused to give out business cards. Company policy was if someone applied I had to submit the application. I already was working till late at night. So I focused on providing service to my biggest customers. These were the real estate agents. As a result I did many small loans. It didn't matter how small if it came from an agent. One full blown first mortgage in Black Sands Beach was about $22,000.
Knowledge of, and prior business with a service provider helps.
So how do you become an insider if you just arrived?
Get the attention of the big general contractors and suppliers. You woo the guys who are hirring the best servicemen. Then ask them who to hire and cite your friend as reference.

It would depend on where you live !
Most of the best are your neighbors in some neighborhoods. That includes mine.
