Aloha,
If I understand correctly, greywater systems can be permitted if engineered. Questions:
-Has anyone here actually gone through that process? Or know someone who has? What’s involved? How much did it cost? Wondering how the cost compares with the conventional cesspool or septic.
-Any contacts for such a project? Engineers, DoH…
-This 2009 guidelines doc is the latest I could find. Is this what’s being used now?

The first question if you live on the windward side is why would you want to. I don't know about permitting but I've work on one in a area where water was scarce and the cost and maintenance is significant.

If you can put in a cesspool, that's what I would do. I doubt that you would save much money doing anything else. If you are talking about a greywater recycling system then I think a bigger catchment tank would be more bang for the buck anywhere on the east side. I throw away water everyday as my tank overflows.

Thanks. I'm not wondering about saving money, or what is "the cheapest." I wondering how to do a greywater system by the book.

No, I didn't, but haven't had a chance to research much beyond this forum. Though, elsewhere it is suggested that one could go for the cesspool to get around the red tape and then DIY a greywater system.

If you can still do it; cesspool, 1 acre, right set back from ocean, etc. No problem, Go for it.

Just be sure to run the grey water through a filtration system to absorb the soap and dirt/body oil residues or you will get some really ripe ( high odor) water in a short time.

If you are relatively careful about what you dump you can use plant beds to get it pretty clean
