Death threats from a UH student
#21
Tom says;
"Basically, a UH student called for beatings and slitting the throats of TMT supporters."

It's a shame that UH would endorse such an obscene and violent position.
Oh, This isn't UH's official position? It's just one person's disgusting opinion? Well, he's a part of that institution, isn't he?

Maybe some of you should give the vast majority of Mauna Kea protestors the same consideration that you give UH. Neither group promotes violence.

I think the vast majority of posters on this thread are discussing the one person who made the threats.

Your comments seem mostly concerned with underwear.

Is he one of the leaders of UH? No? Then your analogy is nonsense.

I don't blame the entire group for the actions and words of this one fanatic. There are freaks in every population. What is much more important is the response from the rest of the activists, which so far has been unsatisfactory. They need to completely denounce him. There is nothing remotely defensible about what he said.

The reality is that his message has been hidden in the noise all along. Any time someone says "Population X is kind and gentle" it is logically equivalent to saying everyone else is cruel and violent. Usually when someone makes reference to their ancestry and culture I consider it a racist statement, because it usually is. Usually, however, it is not intentionally racist and violent, as this was.

And then there's Paul;
"First pro-TMT people were called "infidels" and you let that slide.
Now they're calling for the cutting of throats and you want to laugh that off too.
How far does this have to go before you realize what we're dealing with here?"

Statement from the Mauna Kea Hui & Mauna Kea Ohana:

We wish to respond to the activities of the person calling themselves “Kealoha Iona.” He is not the spokesperson for the Mauna Kea Hui (MKhui) or the Mauna Kea ’Ohana (MK’Ohana).
...
He has been misrepresenting our positions by claiming to be the spokesperson of the MKhui in Press Releases ...

He previously threatened many of the MKHui and ‘Ohana members verbally and has threatened some of us with physical injury and harm.

I had heard that his rant was from at least a year ago and he has since apologized and been very contrite. Sometimes it's better to just let things go.

"I had heard that his rant was from at least a year ago"

Then he's a psychic, since it was about a petition created 2 weeks ago.

He lied in his apology and tried to claim it was from a long time ago, but the petition was from April 13th, so the "apology" is pure BS.

This rage filled woman hating sorry excuse for a man has nothing to do with the merits of the pro or anti telescope arguments, but he is really hurting his cause with the way he behaves.
