Vehicle storage
#1
Are there vehicle storage options in Hilo other than at the airport? If not, any suggestions on how to get from the airport to Fern Acres without renting a car?

make a cardboard sign stating your destination and hitch hike. or call a taxi

The taxi will probably cost you $60.00. That's more than a rental car. A cardboard sign is a good idea...but offer $20.00 for a ride....otherwise it might be a very long time. Also THE BUS stops at the airport every hour and a half from 8am to 5PM. You can then connect to a bus heading to Volcano. I think there is a fern acres stop

Until there is a shuttle service .....we are forced to rely on neighbors....or pay the parking.

the upside is - the airport is just down the way from shopping in Hilo ...its not a big deal to combine trips to pick up a neighbor.

for short trips a rental car can be cheaper than 2 taxi fares

knowing and working with neighbors the key to making life easy in the hinterlands ....

cost me 50 dollars last time - round trip hnl ala moana center for a legal appointment .... before I found out about the bus.... grin

If you don't wanna hitch & can only get a ride out of FA & have the time:

If you can get to the HeleOn stop outside of FA, then go to the PKP mall
( http://www.heleonbus.org/schedules-and-m...lcano-hilo )

& either get a shared ride taxi

or transfer (remember to ask for a transfer slip) to the Keaukaha bus to the airport
( http://www.heleonbus.org/schedules-and-m...n-keaukaha )
note of the ITO service: http://www.heleonbus.org/news/hilo-inter...rt-service

I've walked most of the way to Eden Roc from Hilo (tried hitch hiking, but only got about 1/4 of the way on 3 rides.) It was fun, though, and good exercise. Since that day I've made a point of always picking up hitch hikers, even if they look a bit sketchy (as long as they aren't covered in urine or worse)

The hele on bus is good, but doesn't run very often up the hill towards Volcano. Check the schedule, I think it's 5x/day. Most of them don't go in to FA, just past it. I'm pretty fit so I don't mind a lot of walking.

Just call me Mike

Did some research and Shipman self-storage will store for $75/month. Not sure if that is worth the savings, last I heard the airport is $90/month

Pending State legislation to make Uber illegal.

Also powered alcohol, even though it's not available yet.

Oddly, the website doesn't actually say who the Uber drivers are, but I get the idea it's a collective of people using private cars?
