what about insurance?
#21
Nothing is " proof" in this world that I have seen as of yet.

That's true. Perhaps I should have used the term "resistant" instead. I never intended the structure to be on par with facilities built for government leaders to survive a cold war nuclear strike. If you read my post closely I made no mention of meteor strikes, off course North Korean ballistic missiles, or lava flows.

For an average hurricane, earthquake, or small kitchen fire though, a structure with an exterior made of a rounded, poured fireproof resistant substance would have a good chance to remain intact after one of those events. Nothing is 100% certain, but if I built a home like that I would feel pretty good about going without insurance on the structure.

There isn't anything in the building code against a concrete home as long as there is an approved engineering package.

Tink,

"Nothing is " proof" in this world that I have seen as of yet."

"Proof" is for mathematicians and law courts, nothing else.

You are "use" right, in that sense, but referring to the words "fire proof, wind proof, etc. that people use in a "loose" term when describing something. Us yanks like to twist things up a bit in the use of proper English.

Look around - being "up to code" doesn't seem to interest people too much here.

The similarity between insurance and Vegas is, they will both take your money.

The difference is when the lights and sounds on your machine in Vegas indicate you've won, they will pay you. When your insurance policy says you're covered and you file a claim, not so much.
Case in point, my neighbors had some damage during Iselle. When they filed a claim with their homeowners policy it was rejected because the storm had been designated a hurricane within 48 hours of landfall. Meaning it was officially a hurricane. When they then filed with their hurricane carrier, they were told Iselle was a 73 mph wind storm at landfall, and not a hurricane.

They still have not been paid. But both companies continue to accept their premium payments.

I would be interested in reviewing your neighbor's claim denial letter.

The standard definition of hurricane damage includes any wind damage within 72 hours of a hurricane watch or warning issued by the National Weather or National Hurricane Centers. The speed at landfall shouldn't matter.

If they don't have a claim denial letter it could be they were told something off-hand and the claim was never filed. It could also be that your neighbor misunderstood the denial and perhaps the damage did not exceed their deductible which is usually 2%-5% of coverage limits( standard for catastrophe policies). It's possible that this is just an odd hurricane policy or maybe a bad claims determination.

If their agent isn't helping them I would be happy to review their denial and policy for them.
