Humble new member status(my virgin posting): my partner Stephan and I will be on the Big Island next week, expecting this time to find (and close on) a Leilani acre, if one sufficiently seduces us. We just finished remortgaging our house in LA to start the process of moving to Puna, EVEN DESPITE the fact that we missed out on the Pre-Opra days of uninflated prices.....
Any (kind) suggestions will be gratefully received, about Leilani, Sea View, or buying in general.
We're both healers (psychotherapist, spiritual counselor) and artists-- I've got a couple novels out, and we'll soon have out an album of songs.
We love the Kalani/(SeaView) neighborhood too, but we're daunted by the way-up prices for just a sliver of land, and realtors are pointing us to the beautiful (expensive) acres at Leilani. At least it's not far to Kehena.....
What a great link Punaweb is. It's great to be a member.

Aloha Gary and welcome to the virtual neighborhood and with good luck to you in the physical! My husband and I were initially infatuated with LE also. We actually put two offers in on properties and were out bid. It turned out to be grand for us because these lots were covered with Albezia trees and would have been quite expensive to log off. We ended up with property in Eden Roc Estates apx 1800 ft elevation in Mountain View and are very pleased with our jungle lot. Good luck on your search. Feel free to start a new thread with your questions if you do not see a title that would address your questions. Aloha Mella L

Hi Gary and welcome aboard. I have a lot in Seaview that was bought before the land got too crazy. My husband and I are moving with the three cutest minature dachshunds on earth next year. We are planning to build a modern style home. Rob G on this board also has a lot in Seaview. Keep looking in there if you really want to be by the beach. I have seen a couple of great deals on houses there lately. You could always buy and rent it out until you are ready to move. Leilani is nice but it isn't all it's cracked up to be. A few years back we were really interested in Leilani and made an offer on 3 side by sides. THe seller rejected our offer, this was long before the land rush when things went for $7000-10K in there. At the time we ended up being glad because we really wantd to be closer to the beach but it sure would be nice to have those lots on the market right now!! I am in LA (Studio City) pretty often visiting my sister. Maybe next time we can meet for a Mai-Tai.

Okay, so I pushed the button too quickly. Glad I admitted to be a virgin here, huh.
Thank you both for your aloha, and also for your perspective on the land. I get it about Sea View, certainly; agents and the wisdom of the elders say, hey, there's drugs and thieves and no services in Sea View, and you get just a sliver for the price of a real chunk......
And the dreamier types (we fit that) say, dolphins, Red Road, Kalani. . . . .
Well, we'll be out driving around Leilani and Sea View next week. Wave if you see two bearded therapist/writer/songwriter/astrologer types scratching their heads and driving real slow......
I'm curioius what you mean that Leilani's not "all it's cracked up to be." I can guess there's politics there like everywhere; the lots ARE a full acre vs 1/7th, it IS farther from ocean waves...it IS way expensive. If someone's in the mood to explain what drew you to higher ground, farther from waves, would you let me know? Mahalo.

Aloha all!

I’ve just finished reading all your diverse and fascinating stories and was inspired to post too. Last year I bought a fixer upper house within walking distance of the ocean in Hawaiian Beaches. This summer I quit my job as a sign language interpreter in California and moved here permanently.

The life style is so much more gentle than it is in CA, the drivers more courteous, the people less hurried. Every window in my house has a wonderful view of the surrounding jungle. Everything is so green and lush. The weather is an exciting mystery. One never knows when it will rain or the sun will come out. It changes almost minute to minute. In CA I loved feeling the sun on my skin, but here I love the rain, most of the time it is warm and nourishing.

There have been a few bumps in the road since I arrived. I had a bad bicycle accident last month and broke my jaw in three places and my hand in the bargain. My mouth is wired shut while the bones heal. It could have been so much worse: no broken nose, neck injuries, or nasty scrapes.

I still feel blessed to be here and walk (no more bike riding for a while) to the ocean almost every day to reassure myself this in not a dream.

Hi Gary,
We bought 2 lots in Sea View 3 years ago and plan to build, We find the area getting better each time we visit. We are gald to see the few new houses that have added to the neighborhood. After vacation renting in the neighborhood a few times we could see that most the people there are very kind and accepting. And you can't top the short walk to Kehena beach. There is elect and phone there. Good luck and Give Sea View a chance.
Aloha
Wyatt
