The development on Ulupono St is called Ulupono Center, but it's not a shopping center. They are individual 1/2 acre parcels. Only one lot has been developed so far, a propane storage facility.

Two lots at end of Ulupono, one 9+ acres, other 7+ acres, owner Foster Kern LLC. Lots less than 1 acre up Ulupono are commercial.

According to Damon Tuckers blog, the developer has written him to say the two largest lots have been purchased by Longs Drugs

the steel structure looks like a warehouse-type facility. It looks to have several loading docks and large doors

Don't hold much faith in tuckers blog. Been wrong too many times, just what we need... another longs.
Thanks all. As usual it will be interesting to see what it is. Maybe it's just the start of hopefully more business to come and grow. I remember when people were saying a costco was going to go in there, though that was 10+ years ago.
Last time I drove through there, it seemed like the new transfer station with mounds of trash being dumped there (for unknown reasons). Kinda strange that people would drive there to dump trash rather than drive to a "real" transfer station. Oh well...

A lot of people aren't coming back to south Puna, for various reasons and north Puna now looks much better for the long term, especially large business franchises. There have been a few articles that mention Brison's was moving ahead but KTA had pulled out. There was an older reference to a KTA at this Gateway shopping center. If Long's has bought the two large end lots, it could mean a Longs-KTA shopping center. There are all kinds of changes happening as the aftermath of the June 27 flow. Now that the immediate emergency has subsided, there are multiple things left hanging that aren't reported at all in the news, except a $55 million sports park will be completed for Pahoa. Yippee, happy days are here again!
