Why does HAAS need its own private traffic light?

I don't want to encourage children to walk down post office road which has no sidewalk. I also do not want to stop on highway 130 just so a handful of parents can have an easier job dropping off and picking up their kids. There are many other intersections on 130 that need a traffic light before this one.

Doesn't HAAS run its own bus service? Why not? Where is the enrollment money going? Salaries?

I do not know where Russel is getting his 'facts' from but to say that there are several accidents every week at 130 and post office road is pure BS. Steiner needs to trade in that scooter if she is so terrified.

This is the kind of narrow minded thinking, special interest catering that keeps Pahoa as the laughing stock in HNL. Enjoy your term RR, I predict that it will be your last.

Charter schools get less per pupil funding than DOE schools, and have to pay for facilities out of that funding, which DOE schools do not. They are not exactly wallowing in extra money.

Usually charter schools have widely dispersed student populations because they are a school of choice, so they can afford to have busses only pick up a percentage of their students. I know HAAS had been paying to have their students on the Pahoa school busses, but that service got cancelled right before school started sometime in the last few years. I do not know how that was resolved.

That intersection is a hazard for anyone using post office road to leave Pahoa, it either needs a light or to be made one way going into Pahoa. And yes, many intersections on that highway need a light.

Sounds like HAAS picked a poor location for a school and wants the community at large to cover for them.

If turning off of Post Office road onto 130 is a challenge for you, I recommend finding an alternate route.

I would want a traffic light at Kaloli or Makuu or Kahakai long before Post office road!

If a stoplight on the bypass is a challenge for you, I recommend going through Pahoa town, which is free of inconvenient lights.

The requirement for a stop light, and determining who pays for it is not a simple matter.
When the developer of the lot at Auli'i and Hwy 130 wanted to build a 3 or 4 store mini shopping center, the state wanted to require a stop light at the intersection. It was a catch 22 because the state doesn't want a light at that intersection, and they probably requested it only to drive up the costs to prevent the shopping center from being approved. When it was pointed out that the larger Orchidland Wiki Wiki development didn't need a light, they said, "what does that have to do with this intersection?"

The result was, no conveniently located KTA for HPP, Orchidland, & Pahoa.

Ruderman never made any such quote. At least be factual in your dislike for Ruderman.

It isn't just about HASS, this is about DOT's dereliction of duty by it's officials and their well known policy of saying "NO" to everything that comes their way until they ultimately are forced by lawsuit or death to act. The money has been approved by the legislature for good reason and the DOT needs to raise their collective okoles off of their hands and put them to use.

When it was pointed out that the larger Orchidland Wiki Wiki development didn't need a light

There was supposed to be a light there; the requirement was waived during a bankruptcy hearing (on Oahu) as "too burdensome".

Sounds like HAAS picked a poor location for a school and wants the community at large to cover for them.

HAAS did their best with a limited budget and zero help from DOE. I'm sure there are some better-suited State lands which are conveniently not available, or maybe one of those 20-acre parcels in HPP which can't be used for this purpose.
