I've been saying since 1999 that Newspapers will be dead with the onslaught of the digital era.

It's kind of funny though, in the latest edition, there is an ad for "Advertising Sales Consultant" for the Hawai'i Island Journal on the back page.

I don't see newspapers lasting longer then the year 2013.

As soon as the older generation kicks the bucket, most of us will be receiving our news online.

I wouldn't close the lid on the coffin just yet. I remember when I got my first DOS computer, the paper office was doomed. Anyone notice a lack of paperwork around their office lately?[Sad]

I bet about 8 - 10 of us here on Punaweb could break news faster than the Tribune Herald or any other paper on the Big Island....

If Rob would let us.

Newspaper - is just that.... NEWS... most of the times... Old News.

I feel for those that earn an income off re-writing what is already out there... but those are the breaks.

News gathering has been going on along time.

When I worked for UH Hilo's School paper more then 14 years ago... Had something printed that went nationwide... Via UMagazine an online paper that was starting up back then.

The digital era is closing the gap.

Gannets profits are dropping as well as other print formats.

Why read what you think is news...when it's actually a few days old. You can read current news online before it ever gets to print.

The only thing newspaper is good for now... is lining cat litter boxes and starting fires.... other than that... it's just cutting down trees for no needed reason.[Wink]

Newspapers provide the security of a brand name. When you read something in the New York Times you have a higher confidence that it is true than if you read it on a blog. (Or at least I did until I was interviewed by some Times corospondents and then read the result.) Anyway, "Newspapers" of quality will continue even if they are mostly read on line. I suspect that most of them will continue to put out paper editions as long as there are people who are willing to pay for them. That will be about as long as there are parts of the world that are not covered by broadcast net.

Actually, you might be surprised, but it seems the HIJ is being brought back to life! There are several investors lined up to revitalize the newspaper according to the Pacific Business News.
